I've built several conversions using the DRRI platform as a starting point such as this 1 x 15 combo......

Image

I've never personally built a piggy-back but as long as basic engineering conventions are observed and the cabinetry is properly executed there shouldn't be any problems. The conversion below belongs to a friend in Germany and it turned out real sweet......

There are a number of possible variations that can be built, depending upon the specific sonic requirements.

It's ok, welcome to the forum Bar1. :P Nice amp's guys.

Well I'm going to recheck my readings and play with it a little more. I can only learn so much from reading, I need to get my hands dirty and see what happens. I ordered some JJ 6V6-S just because.

Sorry, about 'hi-jacking' the thread. I wasn't aware of the protocol.

Don't worry about it. It doesn't bother me, were all here to learn and share.

Update. My JJ 6V6-S tubes showed up today and I decided to keep them in the 20.7-21.2, 430 volt range and I think it was a little better than the stock power tubes. So I played with the settings a little and bumped it up to 22.5, 426 and 22.9, 425 after switching side between V7 and V8, and didn't notice much difference so I decided to go extreme and go hot. 24.1, 424 and 24.5 and 423 and I felt it broke up too much for my taste.

So then I cooled them down a lot to 19.7, 431 and 19.4 at 432 and did not like that. It was like chewing on tin foil or scratching your fingernails on a chalk board.

Then I turned it up to 21.7, 428 and 21.2 at 429 and I think that is my zone. I have the "twang" I like at low volumes and have the "crispy critters" when cranked a little harder whether it be by adjusting the volume, or just strumming harder.

I honestly can't say if the JJ tubes were an improvement at this point, but tweaking the bias has made the biggest difference so far.

Congrats on taking that first step to mastering the art of tweaking.

You're on the road to sonic nirvana now.

Rawk on!

My favorite mod is new speakers. I can easily hear the difference. By swapping cabinets you get a noticeably different sound. This is my 65 Princeton RI with a 2x12 Celestion G12H30 / G12 Greenback cabinet and a 2x12 Celestion Blue Alnico cabinet. I actually use only one cabinet at a time.

Here's another cabinet "speaker mod." Its a 2x10 containing the Princeton RI's original Jensen C10R and a Celestion 10" greenback. This box sounds more "boxy" than the thumping 2x12s above.

I've also played the Princeton through a Marshall 4x12 Celestion G12Ls which yields a dark tone.

I'm thinking of building a 2x12 cab now. :P

Another update. I plugged up this morning and did a sound check with the new JJ 6V6-S's, then I re-checked my bias and I was at V7, 22.3 @425 and V8 was at 22.1 @ 425 so I left it alone. All my settings were left the same as last week with no FX pedals involved. Last night I wasn't sure I had any improvement so I slept on it and today I figured I would have to try both channels, all the different settings, all my stomp boxes etc.

This is what I found. I swapped out the Tungsol 12AX7 at V2 for a Sovtek 12AX7 LPS and will goof around with that a little since I prefer the Vibrato channel at #1. That seemed to give me more of the sound I like. Then I hooked up my pedals.

I have a MXR 108 10 band EQ that I thought was awesome, and now I don't use it. My other pedals beside the Rogue delay, I have always been sort of not liking but no matter how I adjusted the EQ, I thought it hurt the true, tube sound for the "Cleans" that I do.

I like the delay with a tad of reverb because I like that, "Surf" tone and this Godin can do it. And now, I can switch pups and get just about get any other sounds I want without compromise.

Bottom line, when I first got this amp, I didn't think it was worth twice the cost of my Peavey Valveking 112. But with yalls help and a little tweaking, this amp freeking works! :D

I am EXTREMELY happy with it.

Now I'm off to change strings.

That's great to hear!

Have fun with the amp and keep experimenting with the tone controls. You'll find a lot of nice sounds coming out.

Enjoy! 8)

OK got my new tester in and with a "matched" Tung-Sol 6V6GT set, they both had 26 written on the box got.

409 plate voltage on both
26.4
24.5

Lowered to

25.5
23.8

Shooting for an average of just under 25.

Too hot? About right? Sounds a little cleaner at the lower bias

Well, recognizing that you are measureing cathode current vice plate current so any calculations are a little high and IF your tubes are rated at 14 or 15 watts max, you are right around 70% max plate dissipation.

I think they are rated at 12 watt. If it were me I would turn them down to see what they sound like, but I like a lot of headroom and always play clean.
