Yes. You are averaging about 77% max plate dissipation. I am assuming your tubes are 14 watts each. If they are only 12 watts each, you are way hot. You might want to dial the bias back a bit.

Your plate voltage is a skosh high (the schematic calls for 415VDC) but not overly so. I generally start a Deluxe Reverb or DRRI with 21.5 to 22.0 mA and work up or down from there, depending upon tube type. Too cold and the amp sounds brittle and mechanical -- too hot and tube life is significantly shortened. Shoot for the sweet spot that makes your ears happy and keeps some "green" in your wallet.

I'm at
V7, 20.0, 429.
V8, 21.6, 429.

The voltage doesn't seem to change much when I tweak. I'll try this and see what it sounds like.

What a difference. :P It now has the clarity that I was hoping up for, like that Tele twang, but still breaks up when cranked up a little bit. I'm wondering since I was running so hot, is why I couldn't stand my Boss BD-2 Blues Driver. Maybe it just pushed it over the top.

After I check my other messages, I'll do some more goofing around. Thanks my friends. This amp now sounds way better than the Valveking 112 that I just sold.

Thank yall very much for your help.

Bingo! :D

Your last two settings are right in the ballpark. They are actually a little conservative becasue we are calculating using cathode curent instead of plate current. Plate current will be a little bit lower so the % of max plate dissipation will be a little lower. It sounds like you have found the sweet spot, though.

For comparison, I run my BDRI at about 53%:

CATHODE CURRENT 40 mA
PLATE CURRENT 38 mA
FENDER TEST POINT 88 mV
PLATE VOLTAGE 410 VDC
% MAX PLATE DISS 53%

and my 5F6A clone right at 70%:

CATHODE CURRENT 50 mA
PLATE CURRENT 48 mA
PLATE VOLTAGE 425 VDC
% MAX PLATE DISS 70%

Now you can work the rest of your tube array. Do one pre-amp bottle at a time until you find "the one". Your V5 (tremolo oscillator) is not too critical so you can use any decent 7025 or 12AX7A there. The V6 phase inverter should be selected based on balanced transconductance to maintain symmetry at the output stage. Once you have the chassis tweaked to your satisfaction, play the amp for 40 to 50 hours to break the speaker in. You may find it sounds just fine at that point or you may decide you'd like to try another "flavor". But bear in mind, any new speaker will need that same break-in period before they really start to sing.

I'm thinking about leaving it the way its for now Arjay until the speaker breaks in. I have a Tung-Sol 12AX7 at V1, and a Sovtek 12AX7LPS at V2.

Most importantly is some playing time I think. I'm just getting back and I think I'm too worried about getting the sound I want out of my gear, and not playing enough. Thanks to yall, I'm in the general ball park and the rest is just a tweak away.

It's now the picker that needs tuning.

Looks like it's dialed in nicely now.

Have fun with it and in a few weeks recheck those voltages. They may drift.

Hello -

I've been running my DRRI in a 2x12 combo that I put together & like the sound quite a bit. I've recently been experimenting with a separate head / cabinet set-up & would appreciate some feedback...

The brit-style rig is paired with a 2x12 & the traditional rig (not quite finished) is on a 1x12.

Thanks for your time.

Very nice, but it's not polite to hijack someone else's thread. Please start one of your own.
