is there a way to be able to play through the amp using headphones so as not to disturb neighbors in the wee early hours?

i see an 8 Ohm connection must be inserted in the int. speaker jack and the ext speaker jack is in parallel. could an a/b like switch be used in the int. speaker jack to switch between internal speaker and headphones? i'm not sure of the impedance load match factor?

You need an adaptor to match the headphone impedance (contrary to popular opinion, not all headphones are 8 ohms) and to match signal levels (the speaker out of an amp will easily destroy a set of phones). You can find them for sale:

http://aloaudio.com/miniwatt-headphone-adapter.html

Or make one yourself:

http://sound.westhost.com/project100.htm

Disclaimer: I know nothing about these items with regard as to how well they work.

You can't just use a stereo headphone adapter - you're not just converting impedance.

On a guitar tube amplifier, the speaker out must be connected to a speaker and/or a resistive load -- or you can damage the internals of your amp. It's unclear if the boxes mentioned present that load; I'd rather spend the money to ensure my amp doesn't melt.

This is the proper tool for the job; other manufacturers may make as well.

Yes, that would be the better choice. As I said in my disclaimer, I did not know how well the other adaptors would work. They were simply examples.

thanks for your post.

not to damage this amp is why i posted here first ... the fender manual states an impedance(resistive) load of 8 Ohms should be used as to not damage the amp. this for the internal speaker.

i couldn't find much data on the APPJ headphone adapter for its specs:
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/twin-aud ... apter.html

your link to the Weber does spec its dummy load at 8 Ohms and is 10.00 less in cost. and it allows for vol adjustment of headphone. from what i can tell , this unit suits the solution.

you folks agree?

as for the project link bluesky posted, i'll check with Fender first as to whether it would be ok. i'm not sure if the 65 deluxe reverb is a bridged amp an/or if the "-ve speaker terminals must not be grounded".

if ok, then i'd like to try the project

No, the DRRI is not a bridged amp. That is an entirely different animal.

However, one side of the speaker connector on the DRRI is, in fact grounded. That escaped my attention. My apologies for leading you astray.

the weber tap arrived. cool little device and works well.

though my headphones suck with it.

headphone i'm using are jvc HA-S700

Driver Unit= 1.57''
Magnet type= Neodymium
Freq Response= 8-25,000Hz
Nominal Impedance= 32ohms
Sensitivity= 101dB/1mW
Max. Input Capability= 1000mW(IEC)

they sound fine with the GDEC30 but not with the weber setup. maybe the impedance difference, 32 vs 8?

let me know some recommendations when have time. thx

Two completely different situations. The GDEC takes the headphone out from the preamp section of the amp, and is closer to a stereo output, made specifically for headphones. With the DRRI, you are adapting the mono signal from the output section of the amp, and reducing it down to headphones and it's still mono even though the signal is split to each half of the headphone. No matter what kind of headphones that you use, the adapter on the DRRI will never sound as good as the GDEC headphone out.
