Okay I have a Twin from about 1995 and I am trying to find out about the footswitch. The download from Fender shows a 3 button switch with as mono 1/4 phono plug. it shows Channel select, Gain select and reverb. I have several 2, 3 and 4 button footswitches and most of them have either 2 plug ins, or a stereo 1/4 plug set up. Has anyone seen this model? on the blueprint it says the foorswitch assembly is part number 047800. where can i get one of these and what type of plug will it take? help please ;} may be a 1997 model? code HE

I had a '96 "Twin Amp" (the "Evil Twin") with the 3-button footswitch. (They used the same footswitch during the Twin Amp's whole production run.)

Yes, it uses a 2 conductor cable (speaker wire -- shielded guitar cables can sometimes cause malfunctions). It's not a vintage style with simple on/off switches -- there are resistors and diodes (plus the LEDs) in it. The amp sends a control voltage to the footswitch, then the electronics inside the footswitch modify that voltage and send it back to the amp. The return voltage tells the amp what to do. The voltage can be a little lower, a lot lower, the same, a little higher, a lot higher -- theoretically you could have dozens of different functions all sharing the same 2-conductor wire.

Most modern-design Fender amps use variations of that system. The current Pro Tube Twin (that replaced the Evil Twin/Twin Amp) has a 4-button footswitch that uses a 2-conductor cable.

Other than eBay I have no idea where to get the 3-button footswitch. They were included with the amps, not an extra-cost optional accessory -- it's a shame some previous owner misplaced the one that came with your amp.

Thanks for the info. You were right, I found several on Ebay. New from about $55. I have the 4 button switch which i hooked up and it controls most of the items but not the reverb. Mine is not the red knob model and I think it is a 1997 model. I took it to a repairman and he said I should just get rid of it because of the PC board will go bad. A real shame as it has such good sound and has a 3 channel set up via the footswitch. Thanks again. ;}

Better to "get rid of" that repairman and find a new tech.

Properly maintained, there's nothing wrong with your amp.

Yeah, that tech is exaggerating. The PCB won't "go bad". They're fairly complicated amps with lots of features (lots of things that can potentially have problems) and they're somewhat prone to bad solder joints so they aren't the absolutely most reliable amps Fender has ever built. But they aren't dogs -- I'd say they're less trouble-prone than Hot Rod Deluxes.

****************

There's always some confusion about nicknames for the various versions of the channel-switching Twins. Some people do refer to the red knob "The Twin" as "Evil Twins". But most people simply call those "Red Knob Twins" (even though they switched to black pointer knobs during the last year or two of production).

The "Twin Amp" with more traditional blackface cosmetics replaced "The Twin". AFAIK Fender never referred to "The Twin" as an "Evil Twin", but during the Twin Amp's production run they mentioned the "Evil Twin" nickname on their website and in their Frontline magazine. Some people call it the "Custom Twin". The '95~'02 "Twin Amp" was what I had (and you have) and it's what I was talking about in my earlier post.

The newest version is generally called the "Pro Tube Twin". But both of the earlier versions were also part of the "Pro Tube" series, so it gets very confusing sometimes.

They're all very good amps. I think the overlapping names Fender has chosen have hurt the sales/awareness of the series -- "Twin" makes people think of the Twin Reverb or maybe tweed Twins, it doesn't make people think of fire-breathing channel-switching amps. Threads like this are often a jumbled mess with people talking about different Twins.

+1

It's paramount to differentiate between a "Twin Reverb" (and the TRRI), "Evil Twin", "Pro Tube Twin", plus the tweed 5F8 and blonde 6G8 "Twin Amp" versions when starting a thread. That will help keep everyone marching to the same sheet of music.

I have been scouring the net and ebay trying to find a replacement footswitch for my '94 Twin Amp (1999 'Evil Twin').

I have contacted Fender Australia about purchasing a replacement and they said that Basically it's a discontinued product and they don't know where I can purchase a replacement.

So I'm stuck with an Amp which I cant swap Gain Channels or use Reverb as Fender, in their infinite 'wisdom', built extra tech smarts into the footswitch (P/N# 047800 or P/N# 0047800000) that don't exist on the Amp. How Ridiculous. Not only am I mightily P!$$3d Off with Fender Australia's Response, but now I'm stuck with an Amp I cannot use, how it should be used.

I'm really hoping Fender USA, or a member here, can point me to an After Market solution, or tell me if a newer version (https://fendershop.co.nz/product/fender ... ainreverb/) has compatible circuitry? ....
