-What is better: Black or Red
-Is this considered a "budget amp"
-How does it sound with a fuzz effect pedal
-Rating 1-10 (if you have one)

Very low budget.

Entry-level, in fact.

And why is that?

Particle-board cabinet instead of plywood or solid wood.
Flimsy chassis.
Cheap speaker.
Common, inexpensive opamps and chips connected in standard, simple circuits.

There are much cheaper crappier amps on the market -- $30 Estebans, Rogues, names that nobody's ever heard of. By "entry level", I don't think Arjay is lumping the Frontman 25R in with them. The Frontman is a decent amp -- but it's just barely a decent amp. It's "entry level" for amps that don't sound like crap.

You can buy better sounding used amps for the price of a new Frontman.

I have a Frontman 25R with an Eminence Ragin Cajun speaker. I have added some additional screws around the perimeter of the baffle board to tighten up the cab. I also made a frame that I slipped between the grille cloth and the baffle board to keep the grille cloth from vibrating against the baffle board with the new speaker. The drive channel sucks. I love the clean channel. I also have a Weber 5F6A clone that I built, a Blues Deluxe Reissue, and a 5F1 modified Champion 600 that I play through a separate speaker cab with a 12" Celestion. The 25R makes a great complement to the Champion 600. If my house were burning down and I had time to save only one amp, it would not be the 25R.

To the roster you may add this......

These amps (in point of fact, every one of the FM models) is considered to be non-repairable by company whose logo adorns the grill cloth.

There exists no "logistics train" for replacement parts nor cadre of factory-trained techs employed by the corporation to repair them. When they fail while under warranty, the amp is replaced with a like model and the malfunctioning unit goes into a landfill. Beyond the term of the warranty and the owner should consider himself to be "flying solo" a la Charles Lindberg......you're on your own, pal.

That's the dirty little secret that nobody at the local GC likes to discuss.

AND IT'S THE IRREFUTABLE TRUTH.

Arjay

Arjay, a little OT, but also an entry level amp. Have you or anyone restored one of these?

Thanks!

If it dies, your local tv/radio repairman should be able to fix it.

Oh, wait. They all died 20 years ago didn't they.

Ok, new here. I have a older 25 R, just called a Frontman Reverb. Thinking about adding a single 10" or dual 10" cab to go with it. Any thoughts....?

Just replace the the stock speaker with an Eminence Ragin Cajun. That will already cost more than the amp is worth.

By the way, it's not polite to hijack someone else's thread.
