I live in a studio apartment. But I feel like I'm out growing the AD15VT (15 watt valvtronix) I've had for the past 5 years. It just doesn't feel alive anymore. I want to make the jump to a tube amp for the first time.

I have the opportunity to buy a DRRI but I'm not sure if it is the right amp for me, due to my living situation as well as $ situation. I've already had complaints once about my guitar volume (I live in a studio apartment). In terms of effects I can really foresee only using a compressor and an OD for the amp.

My worry is that the cost of getting the amp apartment-ready will be extremely expensive.

Compressor + OD + Attenuator + Amp

Seems like this will cost well over a thousand just to get started. However, if this will be a permanent solution, I'm willing to eat the initial cost.

I havn't played live since high school but feel like it could be a possibility in the future. I do record a lot of music. I play mostly popular/blues music, john mayer, Dr. Luke, Girls (the band that did hellhole ratrace), B.B. King.

Anyone have any suggestions or comments?

I think it's too loud for your situation. I often play in small rooms (100 - 200 capacity) and I'm always fighting the tone / volume problem with it. The amp doesn't sound very good until it's turned up a bit and that "bit" often makes it too loud. (in my opinion for the style of music I play)

For the type of music you're talking about the DRRI won't sing until it's too loud for your apartment. Try a quieter / smaller tube amp. There's lots to choose from!

good luck,
dave

^^^^Gotta agree. Only good way to get good tone in a volume restricted situation, IMO, is a setup that cuts out the speaker and uses headphones. And then you have to take care not to damage your hearing

I gotta agree a DRRI in an apartment = unhappy neighbors

Champ or Vibro champ, even thats louder than say a typical stereo or television.

Get a house in the country or invest in a bunch of soundproofing

I'm not trying to be a wise guy, I can't imagine not being able to jam out most of the time, i live on 3/4 of an acer in a wooded sub division and my neighbor closes to me is a new guitar player ( I might have had some influence ).
I start playing at 9 am and try to get quiet around 9 pm

A real sollution would be an SS amp with a headphone jack, as much as it pains me to say that !!!

+1 on the above.

Also, buy an Auralex GRAMMA.

Decouples your amp from the floor, so that when you play, the cabinet vibrations don't transmit to the floor, so that your amp doesn't seem as loud to neighbors below or next to you.

Deluxe Reverb is loud - I have a Princeton and PRinceton Reverb that work great in our house but don't get gigged unless we have a great PA with monitors. For home for crunch, a Dr. Z Mini Z has a built-in attenuator. It's EL84 tubes are also a nice match to a Fender chime, so buy an ABY box and leave it on "both."

For a studio apt maybe you should build one of these.

" Find yourself a silverface vibro champ. "

The best advice. I used my VC (I have three still) nearly everyday.

Wow, a lot of recommendations for that silverface vibro champ....

will it be good for recording? I notice it has only a 10 inch speaker. Part of the reason I wanted the DRRI was for recording, I've been trying to make my songs sound as top notch as possible.

When I go to search online/craigslist, do I just type in "Silverface vibro champ" is there anything I should look for?

why silverface as opposed to blackface? I thought the blackface's were the more desirable amps?

I have had a couple of complaints with my DRRI in a small apartment, but with a little tweaking I now can push 2x12s at TV level and it sounds fine.
