So, how is it done in the BS amp?

The logical way would be to have the processor shut down the high voltage power supply. Its not needed and is a waste of energy. No dummy load needed either.

That would work as an input to the processor. A relay triggered by an output from the processor would be required to disconnect the high voltage. Processor power is cheap. I'm not a digital designer so that's as far as I can go.

Frontman 10G has a headphone jack.

What does that have to do with anything being discussed here? The Frontman 10G is all solid state with DC voltages of +/- 16VDC. We're talking about an amp with a tube output stage and a high voltage supply of around 375 VDC.

It uses a "load protection circuit". From the owner's manual:

"5. Speaker Emulated Output
This output emulates the tonal characteristics of a guitar speaker cabinet and provides a natural valve overdrive tone for connection to a recording device or mixing desk. Always use a good quality screened lead.

NOTE: To record ‘silently’, simply set the master volume to zero. You may also record from this output without a loudspeaker connected, but ensure that no loudspeaker leads are connected to any of the loudspeaker output jack sockets of the amplifier, as this will defeat the load protection circuit and will cause damage to the amplifier."

Sounds like a fancy way to say "dummy load".

From that description, the speaker output jack switches in this "circuit" when the speaker is unplugged, which again indicates a dummy load that is switched in by the jack. Although possible, it wouldn't be a good idea to run the high voltage through the switch on the jack, but it would be simple to switch in a resistor. Using a relay switched by the speaker jack also wouldn't be the best idea and more expensive, whereas using the jack to switch in a resistor is simple and less expensive. BS amps aren't expensive, and probably use the least expensive method.....dummy load. But, it seems that there are no schematics available, so the answer isn't really known, but my bet is a simple, inexpensive dummy load (or even just a very good shorting jack).

BTW, I already read the manual before posting my question, and the manual wasn't specific about exactly how it is done.

I guess this will just remain one of life's little mysteries.

Hi Guys,

We appreciate your concerns here. As any amp with a tube power section would, the Fender SuperChamp X2 requires a load on the power section when the amp is powered on. This is not new or unusual. The amp has 2 separate means by which to record. One is the USB digital output with the use of the Fender Universal ASIO Driver (Win) or via Core Audio (Mac). The other is the 1/4" line output. So, at it's price point, we believe the amp offers a good amount of flexibility and very good sound quality.

With that said, we are always open to feedback from our customers. And we are happy to pass your comments here on to the right folks for consideration. Please let us know if we can assist further.

Indeed very good sound quality, but when I use Line Out it has the volume ON, otherwise there will be no out signal at all. That means, I can't use it on low volume or none at all, like working with headphones. Why that? Or is it a fault? It would of been easy to connect Line Out to computer, or a mixer and then to headphones. But if I have to hear it as well into the speaker, no good...

Did you try this?

Sure did, but with USB I can not record smoothly in Cubase, sorry about that. So USB is no use for me, except maybe Fuse, which I did not try 'till now.
So is normally to have the volume pot louder if I want to have a Line Out signal? Or is it a fault on my Amp?

Reading the entire thread, it's normal, as using the line out uses the signal after the volume control. But, as has been pointed out, using the USB out allows you to turn the volume down so that you have no sound from the amp while still having a signal out of the USB.

Right. Except that I can't use it in Cubase, which allows me to use only one soundcard at the time... Tricky USB, tricky Line Out...
Usually, Line Out is NOT under the influence of the volume pot. Except in this amp, which really SOUNDS AWESOME! That's not a really Line Out.
I will work more on the USB side, but... pitty, pitty, pitty... for such a great amp!
