I recently purchased I Hot rod deluxe amplifier and am wondering if someone can explain what the Peamp Out/ Power Amp In jacks are supposed to be for.

I do have an instruction book but am confused specifically by the book's discription of the usage of these jacks in relation to an effects loop.

As frequently as i've been playing the guitar, when using effects pedals, i've allways connected my instrument to the effects pedals and then the pedals to the amplifier's main imput socket, which would be the socket first socket on the hot rod deluxe.

For the specific ampifier I am asking about (hot rod), can someone tell me if pedals and all other types if effects devices should best be connected to the preamp out/ Power amp In jacks, or if the way i've been connecting pedals is not harmful to the amp?

You may use the power amp in/out jacks as a quasi effects loop if you wish -- no harm will befall your amp. Some effects perform better "up front" and inserted between the instrument and the conventional input jack, while others do better wired into the "loop". Experimentation will reveal which method(s) is superior with your specific pedal array.

Hi dirge326,

- The "Preamp Out" and "Power Amp In" on the HRDlx can be used as an effects loop. Typically, time-based type effects such as delay, will sound better in the loop, and distortion type effects sound better up front into the input. The "Preamp Out" will connect to effects input, and the effects output will connect to the "Power Amp In".

- You can use the "Preamp Out" of the HRDlx to feed a PA, a tuner, or even another amp, with no affect to the amp sound or controls.

- You can plug a preamp, another amp's "Preamp Out", or an effects pedal or even guitar into the "Power Amp In" of the HRDlx, which will bypass the HRDlx preamp section (volumes, tone controls), to use the HRDlx power section only.

You won't harm the amp using effects on the input or in the loop, provided that they are hooked up correctly (amp out to effect in, etc), and the signal is not too hot from the effects (check the level adjust of effect if available). It is up to you as to where the effects go, wherever sound is best. I sometimes use a multi-effects unit plugged into the "Power Amp In" for some different sounds.
