Simply wondering, what are your opinions on pairing a 12" and 10" in a cabinet?

Best of both worlds or out of balance and problematic?

I'm considering mixing a Celestion G12H-30 Anniversary with a 10" Celestion Gold. The sensitivity for the G12 is 100dB and for the Gold is 98dB so they should be balanced dynamically.

But I've read that phasing can be a problem and that pairing similar sized speakers is more consistent. In which case I might choose a Weber 10f150 or Warehouse G10C/S to pair with the Gold.

Thoughts?

+1

It's less of an issue in an open-back combo cab but with a sealed bass-reflex enclosure (or semi-sealed) I'd consider such a pairing as verboten.

YMMV

A little reassuring, I intend to use a convertible open back cabinet with no plans for a bass reflex opening.

It seems as though this is particularly a bad idea for bass rigs: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/speak ... ch-594344/
Which is a relief because this is a guitar amp.

I, of course, ordered my G12h BEFORE learning there are possible phasing issues and checking it out fully  (On the plus side, it was a good deal on the speaker). Particularly problematic because the amp in question is a 68 Bassman (ironically)-- the two power ratings won't match up by themselves! :x

So I'll let you know how this experiment turns out when it's finished (though that won't be until August at the earliest).

Anyone else here given this a try?

For those interested in mixed rigs, here are a few threads from guitar players who love theirs.

I've mixed speakers before but only with each of the different sizes mounted independently in a separate cab, as with this rig......

Image

In this case a pair of 12-inch JBL's in the Twin Reverb, with a stand-alone Dual Showman extension cab mounting two JBL 15's.

Not sure how relavent this is but i have a Supersonic 100w head running through a custom built 2x12 cab loaded with 2 G12H-30 Anniversary speakers.
On the Bassman setting on the amp the speakers are very loose and flabby with no punch or definition. Even when not being worked hard they sound s**t on the Bassman setting, and just about passable on the Twin setting. Which is voiced much differently as you can imagine. But i still have to have the bass EQ on 1 at most to be usable.
I should ve stuck with my preference of Webers when speccing the cab.

I can't say much about the import Celestions. I'm certain that a pair of Ipswich-made V30's would be far more articulate and nuanced than new G12H-30's. The Weber's as well.

The Vintage 30s are much better and tighter in the bottom end. But I don't like the overly harsh mids that they have, to my ears anyway.
I plugged the Supersonic head into the Weber 12F150 in my BDRI and it sounded fantastic. Tight, punchy and clear with no boom of flabbyness in lower registers. so as soon as the sole Weber distributor here in the UK are open again I'll be ordering a couple.

Sounds like the Weber's are the ticket, dc.

Rawk on!

Yeah. I think so. The one I put in my BDRI blew me away how good it is and how it transformed the amp. Only reason I went with the Celestion is that the company that built the cab mainly use them exclusively and have a excellent reputation in the Uk nationwide. I ve been in contact with the builders and they ve offered me a full refund on the speakers, so can't complain really with service like that.

Apologies for the thread hijack btw.

After further reading and playing I think I'm starting to see the light: a 30-watt Weber 10a125 paired with a 50-watt Weber 10f150.

Dc01 this is very much thanks to your input, so thank you!
And Arjay, I WISH I had the opportunity to hear that rig in person! Though I suspect that were you to dime it I'd be able to hear it from where I'm standing anyway. Thanks for sharing that battleship with us civilians.

So, how do these Weber 10" speakers handle distortion? I use my Fulltone OCD a LOT.
How about bass response? I'm looking for a good blend between tight bass and big bass-- able to handle syncopated cleans, lend weight to palm mutes & slides, and blast out some big room shaking chords.

Yeah, it's capable of generating some serious seismic activity.

I think you'll find those Weber 10's to be bright and punchy, with a tight and very articulate bass response. They won't "thump" like a twelve or a fifteen but I'm guessing that you'll be very pleased with them. As for habitually using your OCD, have no fear -- it'll sound great. You might find yourself experimenting with its tone switch and knobs to dial it in "just so". I use my Fulltone quite a bit as well.

Rawk on!
