For months I have been looking at a fender amp to go with my USA deluxe Telecaster and I settled on the 65 Princeton reissue. From reading on here the consensus was the Deluxe Resissue over the princeton but as I live in a flat with thin walls I chose the 15 watt model as a potential suitor.

I bought a little vox AC4tv for £120 as a stand in while I got the money together for the amp. Which in fairness is too loud on the 4 watt setting.

I finally tracked one down in a shop about 45 minutes away and headed down there yesterday. I had a long hard play on it and I was lucky that it was straight out of the box so if I bought it I would be the only player to use it.

At low levels it sounded lovely but when I cranked it and messed around with the settings it sounded beautiful even with my shoddy playing. I was happy to buy it until this point but when I got the tubes working the horrible realisation came to me - I would not be able to use this baby to its full potential. It would sit in my bedroom and never sing as it should.

I left the store with a sad feeling. However, I will be moving to a house in a year or two as we have our first child and when I do I will be able to up the gear and I think I will jump up to the deluxe reissue! Especially as I hope to play in a band again soon.

Still that doesn't make it any easier at the moment. Sorry about the long post but its playing on my mind a little.

At least I have the Vox to keep me going but I may trade it for a champion 600 if I can find one - do you guys have an opinion on that? Thanks in advance.

Tom

Thanks Bill

I had a quick read just now but I'll look in detail later.

Am I right in thinking that you posted some clips a few days ago. I'll try to search them out.

The only thing is I don't think I would be able to mod the amp on my own. Would my local guitar shop do it for me?? Sorry I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to amp modding

Thanks for replying. I'm going to see if there are any cheap ones going in the UK.

Tom

The Wampler Black 65 is a great pedal for giving you that cranked blackface tone without having to crank the amp. I live in an apartment now and use mine with my Twin Reverb. Of course, that thing never had any break-up anyway, but the pedal sounds great.

No, I doubt a local guitar shop would do it.

To tell the truth, the C600 is so easy to mod, even a cave man could do it.

Seriously though, my thread includes pretty detailed descriptions of what I did, reference schematics, and photos showing the mods. Part descriptions are also provided. The circuit board has all components labeled making it easy to match parts to the schematic. Also, the PCB is "through-hole soldered" meaning that the component mounting holes are plated inside the holes and on both sides of the board. As long as a little care is exercised, components can be removed/replaced without needing to pull the board from the amp chassis. Although I modded the amp over the course of several weeks (trying different things to see what I liked best), all of the mods I made could be done in an afternoon.

There are some sound clips from an early phase of my mods, but I have yet to post any with the final mods and with the amp playing through an open back 12" cab. I keep promising but just have not had the time.

Hi Bill

Thanks for this I'll do a proper read through over the next couple of days.

Seems like it can be done by a novice like me...

But I think I may turn out to be a caveman without the necessary skills!! :D :D
