My co-worker has a Blues DeVille sitting in his garage that had a rip in the tweed, so someone had the bright idea to remove all the tweed. Now it is just wooden box that looks like hell. I'm going to try it out and see if it even works. I'm not sure of the year it was made, but I will get a picture of the back plate for a serial number, etc...

A couple of questions:

1) Any idea what the approximate cost would be to re-cover the unit? Or should I sand it down and do something else (i.e. paint, thin carpet cover)?

2) If it does work, what should I offer for it? (Its his brother-in-laws that lives over seas, so I think he'll let it go without a fuss)

3) I have a Blues Jr and was looking for something that can give me some more distortion. I recently played a Marshall Valvestate 8240 and really liked the sound and was wondering if I can get a similar sound out of the DeVille? (I know it wont be exact as one is solid state, but was hoping that the tube amp would yield a richer distorted sound)

TIA

OK, first things first, make sure it works.
2, Check Mojo Sounds I think, your looking at about $100 to re-cover(haven't checked prices in awhile)
3,If you need to do all the work on it I'd say around $300-$350(i'm seeing used ones in the $400-$500 range around me.
4, Pedals if you want more of a Marshall sound.
Good luck to ya, post up pix or keep us up to date on this. Also I'm sure someone with alot more knowledge of these will chime in with more info.

Plugged it in....the light came on. Good sign so far. Let it warm up for a few minutes and then started to turn the knobs up from one. I could hear some crackling as I turned them all to 5. Plugged in a strat with DiMarzio Area pups and immediately noticed a hum that disappeared when I touched the strings. Oh yeah, the ground prong was missing. I played some chords and you can tell that there is some cleaning that needs to be done as it never held a note constant, but came in and out. When I pushed the bright button, it became loud....then went dull, then went bright again. All in all, it needs some exterior cleaning, the pots and buttons probably need replacing, the tubes probably need replacing, and the speakers probably need replacing. the circuit board had a 1993 date on it.
Here are some pics:

Any thoughts on what to do with this amp? Is it worth even restoring?

I personally love these amps. I have the smaller Blues Deluxe. Your not gonna get a good amount of distortion from that amp, just an overdrive. Think AC/DC. But it will take pedals really good. I think it is worth restoring. But from looking at the pics and your description, I wouldn't give no more than $250, and that's pushing it. If you decide to get it, start a new thread about restoring your amp and you should have several knowledgable people here that can help. Another thing, hope your good with electronics and soldering. Good luck.
