ok, got to spend a couple hours playing the 57' Deluxe today, all I can say is Damn! it just sounds incredible! two questions for you amp guys, 1st when you put different tubes in a self biased amp does it take a bit for it to adjust to them? could just be me, but it sounds even better today than it did the other day when we changed tubes, the amp even sounds a bit more quiet, between playing.Second question is it normal for the metal control panel to get quite warm after playing for a while? noticed when switching the standby the panel was actually hot to the touch.
Overall this amp finally gives me "the sound", I am really, really pleased.

Some people claim that tubes have a break-in period. If a tube has been tested and burned in by the manufacturer/reseller, that time should be minimal I would think.

The amp is class A which means the power tube is conducting all the time, unlike a class AB push-pull amp, so yes, it can get warm. The name plate that I had made to go on the back panel of the 5F6A clone that I built is right next to the two 6L6GCs and rectifier. It used to get quite warm as did the control panel. I adjusted the chassis so that there is a 1/4" gap between the top of the chassis and the back panel. The hot air now has a more direct route to escape and the amp runs a bit cooler. Not sure if you can do something similar with your amp.

Yep they run quite hot. The chassis on my 5E3 gets almost uncomfortably hot to touch, these amps are Cathode Biased and run the tubes at or near 100%, or more, of their max dissipation.

When I remember to, I sometimes run a small 6" personal fan pointed into the back of the amp when working the amp hard with the band and it makes a surprising difference in lowering the temperature. You dont need to this though, just make sure the back of the amp is left unobstructed.

5E3's are great amps, with amazing tone.

thanks guys! this is what is so great about this forum, there is a lot of technical knowledge just waiting for the asking. I had picked this amp up used and am new to the 5E3 amp(total different/wonderful animal than I am used to) I just wanted to be sure it is in A+ condition. The seller packed this amp very well, but I think it still took a bit of shaking, on the 1st day it had that volume trouble, I thought was just tubes, but after testing it I removed the back panel to post pics, while it was off I carefully checked all the connections/wires to make sure everything was tight.Yesterday was the next time it was played and it just seemed better/perfect all around, makes me think something was loosened during shipping, now has been corrected.
As far as the heating issue, I will be sure to keep it in an open spot to ventilate.
Anyone on the fence about getting a 5E3, I sure love mine, best gear choice I have made!

I'm happy to hear you're enjoying your 5E3. I built a 5E3 using tube depots PCB board and it sounds absolutely fantastic. I even hand fabricated the chassis and cabinet. It was quite a fun project. I've been gigging with it for about 1 1/2 years and haven't had a single problem other than the 2 amp fuse blowing once. New fuse, good to go. I play the $hit out of mine. 5-6 gigs a month and weekly practices. It's a work horse.

I found mine gets hot too. Nature of the beast.

To answer your question about pedals, as I'm sure you probably found out, it takes them really well. I don't drive my amp into distortion for my dirty sound cause it doesn't work well with module effects (delay, chorus, etc.). I actually have all 12AY7's in the preamp. It only gets dirty when you dime the amp, which I never do. It gets too loud. Mine is 20 watts. I run mine at about 3, and I either use my MIA Crunch Box for a modern Marshall type distortion or my Keeley moded Blues Driver for more classic dirt. I run my module effects (chorus, tremolo, delay) after my distortion in the effect chain.

When I'm not playing modern tunes and playing blues, the best sound I've found comes from a 12AX7 in the V2 position, plugged straight in either channel, dime the channel you're plugged into and turn the other channel to 5-6. The power tubes break up nicely. IMO, that's the dirt / break you want to get from your amp, not the distortion from the preamp tubes. Roll back the volume or play lighter for a clean sound.

Oh, I covered my cab with 2x2 twill carbon fiber and I have a Texas heat speaker. :D

Here's my build thread if you want to check it out.

Wow! nice 5E3 build. cool black tweed, bet that holds up well on the road.I have since changed my 1st preamp to a 12AY7 again, great clean tones at a hair under 3 volume, and yes, my pedals sound great through it, most of all the Strymon Bluesky reverb really sets it off.I have never had a amp like this, for me it's perfect!

Had to update, it's 1 year to the day of receiving my 57' Deluxe, made a few changes, NOS RCA tubes, original style speaker wire(switchcraft plug)and some fun cosmetic changes, repro Fullerton, California name plate, and pre 58' Jensen speaker label.
I'm loving this amp more and more as I play it, surprised these amps didn't go over that well, here are some new pics.Image

Cosmetically, that's a fine looking reproduction......one of the best I've seen yet.
