I've seen them cheaper before but that's still a pretty righteous price.

Worth a look-see IMO.

A '57 Deluxe reissue just popped up on craigslist about an hour and a half from me, the guy wants $900 for it. I'm tempted.

Man, $900! wish that was in my local craigslist, give us a report if you pick it up.I really thought a few people on this board had them, and would chime in here.

well, finally went for it, it should be here next week, quick question, facing the back of the amp, which of the 12AX7'S do I replace with a 12AY7 ? and will the amp need to be rebaised?

Tubes are numbered looking at the back from right to left, so V1 is the far right most tube. No, you don't have to rebias for preamp tubes and since the 5E3 power tubes are cathode biased, you don't have to rebias those if they are replaced either.

I'm interested to see what he thinks of this amp. I've got a Deluxe clone (5E3) and it's an amp that likes to be pushed to bring out that signature sound. Also louder than one would think for 12W. That's the joy of the Deluxe - you don't use dirt pedals - you just turn it up!

Cathode bias + no negative feedback = tone heaven

I really want to build my own 5E3 clone. :D Gonna have to wait a while though until my job situation stabilizes.

I will Bill, I just recieved the 12AY7 preamp tube in the mail yesterday, plan to give it a test run with the stock 12AX7, then switch to see the difference, will give full report after I put it through the paces.

Amp arrived about 3 hrs ago, plugged the 54' MB straight in, and it was tone, tone tone! then it crackled, and was loosing volume, my heart sank... it sounds to good to return, called my neighbor(awesome guitar player, and luckily good with amps) he came right over with his box of tubes, changed out a few, and tonal bliss! it had a mix match of tubes in it ,then, as I had hoped, touch sensitive, perfect. My hope was that I would say WOW! why did I wait so long!, well, WOW! why did I wait so long! hate to say it but it makes the modded BJ sound like a transistor radio. We tried the 12AY7 in the 1st preamp position, but as I play at low bedroom volume, we felt it lost a little something and changed back to a 12AX7.Next we put on my pedal board, I just picked up a Strymon Bluesky reverb pedal, and we ran through the pedals, excellent, with a little reverb, the tone I have been seeking! I will add some pics in a few, but have to play a while. :D
