I may have a chance to pickup a Fender 57' Deluxe reissue new, at a good price, been eyeballing these for some time now.I would love to hear comments from owners, I am currently playing a Fender blues jr, tweed relic, modded with the Bills mods, and speaker replaced with a Celestion G12H 70th anniv. speaker. My question is what should I expect if I go for it, I am a home player, (play at lower volumes, usually blues, classic rock ect.)love pedals/ play amps clean then use overdrive pedals to dirty it when needed, do they take pedals well? I do love reverb, but would get a pedal to add, as the deluxe has none( maybe a Strymon). Not asking to hear about other brands/clones, but would love to hear from actual owners, thanks in advance!
Oh, and none of the shops near me have one to try out in person.

I don't have one, but I am considering building a clone later this year. I just built a 5F6A clone earlier this year:

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=65668

One thing that you will find with the 5E3 reissue is that Fender (and most of all the other builders that make clones), is that they use a 12AX7 in V1. The original 5E3s used a 12AY7 in V1:

http://ampwares.com/schematics/deluxe_5e3.pdf

The 12AX7 has much more gain than a 12AY7 and tends to drive the amp into distortion earlier. Some people like that, other do not. The 12AY7 tends to impart a smoother tone to the amp with a little more clean headroom before distortion sets in.

There are plenty of NOS 12AY7s on the market at resonable prices. My favorite source is:

http://www.kcanostubes.com/catalog/5r4gb

Personally, I use this one in my BDRI and 5F6A clone:

http://www.kcanostubes.com/content/nos-jan-ge-12ay7

New ones are also available from Electro-Harmonix:

http://www.tubedepot.com/eh-12ay7.html

I tried one in my BDRI but did not like the tone. Also, the tube was a bit noisier than the GE I use now.

Bill, thanks for the reply, I already plan to put in a 12AY7 if I take the plunge on one, as I like my amp as clean as possible then use OD pedals to drive as needed.Because I play at very low (bedroom) volume I think with tube change ,this should give me what I am after.
My big concern is will this amp give me the big improvement in tone over my modded BJ that I am expecting? I have what I consider, top of the line guitars, but feel a upper quality amp may be what I am lacking (the modded BJ sounds really good, just hoping the Deluxe will be that much better.)

In my opinion, the two amps will sound totally different from each other as the design and tube compliment are completely different. Whether the Deluxe sounds better is a personal choice that only you can make. FWIW, I will build a 5E3 Deluxe before I would buy a Blues Jr.

got ya, on that, no one has one in my area to try, and I agree, the BJ did not sound good, but upgrading the speaker and having some mods done made it pretty good, just I'm looking for really good in about the same size tweed package.

The 57 Deluxe Reissue is just that; a reissue of one of Fender's original "holy grail" Tweed amps. Its not exactly the same as the original (there are other clones that are more authentic), but pretty darn close. The BJ uses output tubes that are not known for the traditional "Fender sound". No mods to a BJ will ever get it to sound like a 57 Deluxe. There are several people on this forum who own and love their BJs. Unless you are able to hear the difference between the two amps, it will be hard to make the choice. In any case, I know which one I would choose.

yes, the reason I keep eyeballing these is just that, I think this will give me the "Fender" tone in my head, still a lot of cash to put out, just wish I could have it here to A/B before laying out the cash.

Have you ever considered building an amp? The 5E3 is not that hard. I built a 5F6A which is way more difficult and had only a few problems that were solved with the help of several of the people here. You learn a lot about amps and have something that is as good if not better than what you can buy today. It doesn't say "Fender" on it, but it is also a lot less money.

Bill, here is the thing, I'm not real handy with that sort of thing, and it would be more than I would want to deal with. Bottom line is I would have no problem putting out the cash for a Fender 57' Deluxe if I plug in and say "wow, why did I wait so long".(I have a feeling I will!)

Was just a thought. Several people here have built their own amps. Gives one a real feeling of accomplishment.

Good luck in making the right choice for you.
