How difficult is it to change an input jack on a Hotrod Deville? I would like to do it myself, but would rather not electrocute myself or anything.

Hi C-Rock,

After observing proper safety precautions, ie unplug the amp from electricity, check that the power supply capacitors are discharged, you then have to remove the main circuit board from the amp. To remove the board, remove all knobs, and the nuts that hold the pots and jacks in place (only the ones necessary to remove the board), unscrew the screws holding the board in place, and unscrew the green ground wire from the chassis, and carefully work the board down enough to swing the board out exposing the underside. Keep in mind the ribbon cables and not to flex them at the joint end, but bend them a little in the middle instead. As you lower the board, also be aware of the components close to the bottom edge of the board, being careful not to stress them which can result in broken joints or circuit traces. You might also have to cut off the cable ties around the power supply wires on the left to allow the board to be removed. Not necessary to unplug those wires to remove the board enough for service. Sometimes, you might also have to remove the strain relief for the reverb cables, if they interfere with the board removal.

It takes about two hours or so to disassemble, replace jacks and reassemble (I've done it many times, it might take longer the first time). I would recommend replacing both jacks with some traditional jacks if you are going to all of this trouble. While the board is out, check all solder joints and re-flow any questionable joints. I would expect a charge of about $120, more or less, for a tech to do job like this, but prices vary.

Here is a pic with the traditional jacks.

Yes, thank you!

I have also used these Hi-D types, they feel more like the originals when plugging in, and also relieve the stress on the jack joints on the board.

I forgot to mention, use isolation washers when using any jacks that have metal threads to keep them from contacting the chassis as the originals were isolated.
I haven't tried without the washers, but I would expect that noise could be introduced if not isolated.

Hi-D jacks, my work also:
