I have a problem: My blues junior makes any tube in the 1st socket microphonic. Not massively, just enough to make a nice rattling sound when I play. I've tried switching tubes, but all the tubes are fine in either of the other positions.
Does anyone have an explanation or possible solution to this problem?

My Super Champ XD does the same thing. Its not microphonic tubes you are hearing but rather a mechanical tube rattle...your tubes are fine. I called Fender and they told me to take mine back and exchange it for a new one (just got my amp from the GC). I guess this is not a completely uncommon thing with combo amps since the tubes are sitting right behind the speaker and can get pounded pretty hard. Some amps are really bad while others don't seem to be effected by tube rattle at all. Unfortunately the local GC doesn't have any more SCXD's in stock so I have to wait till one shows up. Apparently this is not a "fixable" thing at a repair center, at lease not on the SCXD.

Somewhere in between taking another look at the problem, and reading your reply, I realized I should have figured that out a long time ago. such a noob.

Thanks though. Now I need to find out if it's still under warranty...

You might want to get a tube shield for the preamp tube if it's an ongoing problem. You'll probably have to drill some holes to mount it or get creative with the existing screws, but it would protect the tube from some of the buffeting it gets.

An alternative would be to put a couple of heavy O rings on the tube. The extra mass and damping cuts down on the vibration. 12AX7s don't get very hot, so most any O ring would stand up, at least for a while. If you can get silicone, they're more heat-resistant. A 3/4 inch I.D. O ring is the right size, if I recall.

Thanks Bill!

However, I took it back to Long & McQuade today, and they presented me with another option... They told me that for what I was playing, a bigger amp would be more suitable, and I could exchange the amp if I wanted.

So I did... for a used DELUXE REVERB. At NO extra cost! (It was a tweed BJr with the Jensen spkr) And I've had the amp for a year and a half! My respect for L&M has been restored.

Moral of the story:
Turns out the BJr was not the amp for me. My Les Paul screams through the DRRI! And the clean... everything I ever wanted. And it's loud...er!
I've found my holy grail, and I'm not letting it get away.

So... Got any mods for a DRRI, Bill?
Just kidding

Postscript.
I was trying the amp with a satin-finished ES-335 in the store... the only guitar I have ever heard that I like better than my LP...
I think I'm getting some bad GAS here...
