Well, I took the plunge today and bought a Deluxe Reverb Reissue, the limited edition version (wine red and wheat). The local Fender dealer made me an offer I just couldn't refuse... not that I tried very hard to refuse...

Well, I'm absolutely thrilled with the amp. I'm working on a number of surf guitar songs so the classic Fender reverb and tremolo are perfect.. I really like the clean tones and the look of the limited edition. From what I've read, this version isn't quite as loud as the standard DRRI due to the difference in speakers but, actually, that suits me fine. I only play guitar here at home (no gigging) and its plenty loud for that. I'm looking at maybe adding a boost pedal of some sort to get some breakup at lower volume levels, maybe a Blues Driver or something along those lines..

The only downside is that I justified getting the DRRI on the basis of trading my HSS Am Deluxe Strat for guitar lessons, then applying the $$ I'm paying for lessons to paying for the DRRI. I never really bonded with the HSS Am Deluxe, although it is a beautiful and very well-built guitar.. Its going to a good home where it will be played at gigs on a regular basis...

It seems that over the past few years my preference has definitely been for more vintage type Strats (SSS config with vintage-sounding pickups) and my CP 50's fits that preference very well. I've also got two more Strats, plus the Am Std Tele shown in the picture so I'm not short of guitars. Before the DRRI, my only amp was my solid state Johnson JT-50 Mirage modeling amp. I don't dislike it -- it is fine for what it is...

So, bottom line is that I'm essentially trading my Am Deluxe for the DRRI. I paid almost exactly the same for the Am Deluxe (back in 2009) as the cost of the DRRI. I'm satisfied and I know that, if I ever want to replace the AM Deluxe, I'd choose an SSS config'd one anyway...

Well, I may end up with a win-win on this one, with me getting both wins.. The guitar lesson deal is off the table for now so I'll probably hang on to the Am Deluxe.. Maybe with the DRRI, I'll have a better chance of bonding with the Am Deluxe... Worst case -- I build a loaded SSS configuration pickguard with vintage-sounding pickups to use as an alternative to the SCNs and S1 switching..

Well that will work nicely too!

Congrats on the amp! It's a killer.

Congrats surfguy101!,

8 months ago I got your model DRRI. Wanted it mainly for jazz rhythm guitar as I thought that the Jensen P12Q (DRRI ltd) sounded considerably darker than the Jensen C12K (DRRI regular). Did not notice or care about volume differences.

Problem is have recently done a direct comparison between the DRRI ltd and a vintage SF DR 1970 (blackfaced). Liked the SF DR better, might have to swap out.

Surf: DRRI ltd sounds good for surf. My other amp is a 1967 Pro Reverb non-original, and when plugged into the Vibrato channel with Bright switch on, there is a great surf tone. Looked for a surf amp for months, and this forum was a great help. For certain desired tones like surf, I think multiple speakers inside a single cabinet give great harmonics, overtones, etc. (but not good for jazz rhythm).

By the way, if you ever see a Johnny Marr Jaguar (new from Fender January 2012), try to play it with the pickup selector in the #2 position (parallel), some great surf tone I think. Craig H
