Can anyone tell me how to adjust the bias on the super champ XD? It was mentioned in one post, but not in detail. I have put in some RCA's and I want to make sure it is set properly. Perhaps the Fender Rep can chime in on this?

It's real easy.

Unscrew the chassis from the top with the top 4 screws. When it drops down you will find at around top center the bias adjustment pot. It has a light blue top with a screwdriver slot on it.

The bias for 6V6's is 20mA - 28mA. I bias mine at 23mA for an optimal clean tone.

This really worries me. The more knowledgeable folks (for sure excludes me!) on this and other forums talk about biasing the SCXD, yet the owner's manual mentions nothing about it.

So I took it upon myself to call Fender and ask them.

On Monday, I talked to "Scott". He told me, after checking with some tech folks, that the SCXD was not designed to be [re]biased at all. He said to just throw in a pair of new 6V6's and you're done.

OK, well, I continued to read on the forums about how to do it anyway. So I called back again yesterday (Tuesday) and asked for Shane Nicholas. (I'd heard him mentioned as an authority.) I was told by "Ed" that Shane didn't accept outside calls, but he'd be glad to help. He seemed very up on the SCXD. Ed informed me that under no circumstances was the SCXD designed to ever be re-biased, and that in fact doing so or attempting to do so would instantly void the warranty! Again he said it had been designed just to throw tubes in as needed and go on.

So there you go...

I must say it's disconcerting at best to see the disconnect between the forum experts (who I respect) and Fender.

I wish Shane would weigh in here and state something definitive in writing that we could rely on.

Hey Belair,

I'm new to this whole Bias thing as well so I'm glad to read that you are nipping it at the bud. I'm thinking of eventually changing the 6V6 tubes completely, would I need to rebias it then?

Hi Folks,
While we realize there are many enthusiasts on the Forum who do their own repairs and modifications, we must state "no user servicable parts inside." A situation that requires getting inside your amp (high voltage!) is best left to a qualified technician; if it's a Warranty situation, one of our authorized service centers.

Regarding the phone call...I'm just one guy, but we have a whole staff next door handling Customer Service and Consumer Relations. I do occasionally answer questions on the Forum when I have a few free minutes here & there, and I genuinely appreciate learning from Fender amp lovers who post here.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, Shane--I think everyone here appreciates how busy you are.

I think there are two other "appreciation" points:

1. The Super Champ XD is an awesomely cool little amp, especially for the price.

2. Fender has to minimize the potential for liability claims. So it's understandable that you'd have to say "no user-serviceable parts inside."

That said, the SCXD is easy to bias. Thanks for putting the control in there!

Hi sparky,

I'm sorry, but that's way, way over my pay grade. Anything more than plugging in and twisting a couple of knobs and I'm lost.

Perhaps someone else will chime in.

Despite Fender's official position, you should definitely rebias if you change the 6V6s. Power tubes vary widely in the current they consume at idle, which is why the control is in there. The spec for the SCXD is 40 millivolts from pin 8 of either 6V6 to ground.
