Hey there guys. I had a question regarding my hot rod deville 2x12 amp. I bought this amp a few months ago and have been really pleased with the tone. Clean is beautiful. Pedals are needed for some harder rocking sounds though. My biggest question was if any of you guys thought the amp was really loud. I know that with rock you can never be "too loud" but It just seems that I cant turn the amp up past 1 before the amp begins to rattle everything in my room. I know tube amps are louder than solid state amps but I want to be able to drive the tubes and play at a louder level without blowing out my ear drums. Do you guys have any suggestions or solutions to this problem?

Thank you guys for your feedback

I roll the guitar knobs down and use a pedal. Keeley modded TS-9 is nice for early OD on a super clean & loud amp. JME.

BTW... good caps in the guitar allows a LOT more flexibility in tone range.

You bought a 60 watt amp - it's too much amp for you if you can't use it past 1.

I'd suggest getting a different amp with a lower wattage. It's the best way to do it. Plenty of under 20 watt Fenders that sound amazing and will let you get power tube distortion at more reasonable levels.

If your heart is set on this amp and not selling it for the right amp, some suggestions:

Auralex GRAMMA - this won't help with the volume, but it will acoustically decouple the amp from the floor and stop most of the rattling problems in the house when you play. I own 2 of them and couldn't think of playing in the house without them. I also bring one with us for live shows in case the bass amp starts resonating on a portable stage.

Speaker Attenuator - this "throttles down" the power going to the speakers so you still get the power tube distortion. Will make you go through power tubes 2-3x faster. I have the Dr. Z Brakelite in my Bandmaster but there are other brands.

Effects Loop Attenuator - this doesn't affect the power tubes as much , but may work. I'm sure lots of people make these.

But again, if the amp is too loud at 1, either return it or sell it and get a smaller amp. You'll be a lot happier with an Fender amp you can play at 5-6 than an amp you have to keep barely on -- you're missing out on the good tone.

The Princeton and Deluxe Reissues are great amps and are built far better than the Deville series - you might like them.

Use the drive or more drive channel for less low-end. You can dial the drive up for distortion or down for cleaner sound, and then dial the master up/down to the desired level of sound. Also, use input 2 for more attenuation.

What do you mean "tube amps are louder than solid state amps"?

Tube amps are rated using the RMS method -- transistorized amps are measured using "Behringer watts" (equal to 3/4 of the RMS equivalent).

+1 There are plenty of 20 watt non Fender amps too. Everyone makes them now. Try them all and see what flavor suits your style of playing. Almost everyone I know is using lower wattage amps now and 20 watts is pretty much the norm. The DeVille is real overkill for most situations. If you ever want to not get hired back to a gig, be painfully loud, works every time.

Thanks responding to this post. It sort of bums me out though that I can't drive this amp as much as I would like. What other amps would you recommend then that I look at? I know there is the deluxe and the blues junior. Are there any other models that would be lower in wattage but will still give me the sound that I'm looking for? I feel that if I go with too small of an amplifier I will just get the crappy sound that you would get from a practice/starter amp.

Try the blues jr, it's a great amp 15 watts and can be loud but you
can turn both volumes to 4 and have great tone and bed room
level.
Or you can get a VHT special 6, 6 watter hand wired in china.
No experience but basing off of what've I've read

The VHT 6 is hand wired, no pcb involved ans a great sounding easily modified amp.

Nothing crappy about the sound of a Princeton or deluxe Reverb, or even the Blues Jr.

Don't confuse any of those with a starter amp or crappy sound.

You're right, there is inconsistency in the way power is measured and 'marketed'. I've seen some manufacturers marketing the peak power with no mention of RMS.

Many solid state amps are based on cheap and easy designs. The power amp may genuinely be 50 or 100 watts. But because they're doing things cheap and easy, they toss in a POS speaker that might have sensitivity rating of 90db. The result is that you're 22watt Deluxe Reverb is definitely going to be louder than the cheapo SS 50watt and probably louder than the 100watt amp.

But it's not an inherent problem with SS. It's a design problem.

I have hot rod Deville as well, and yes it is loud. I use an attenuator with mine.

What kind of attenuator do you use with your amp? I looked into the THD ones mentioned but I don't know if i want to dish out that kind of money right now. I would much rather just stick with playing at a lower volume. If I could find a cheap attenuator that works and still keeps my amp sounding great that would be awesome.

I got a Fromel mod for my 212 Deville. Now the Volume knobs give me greater control. Where I used to have the Clean channel on 1 delicately balanced so as not to be too loud, now I have the same volume at 4 or 5. So below 4, I can get a quieter level that was previously not available. :)
