Hi All:

Recently bought a brand new Blues Deluxe Reissue. Great sounding amp in the store, but when I brought it home and starting jamming, I was beseiged by an incessent ring/hiss type sound, especially when I play single notes on the lower end of the D and G strings. Even with no effects inserted (i.e., just guitar into amp), the ring/hiss still persists. It almost sounds like a tube is loose or something, so I took it into Guitar Center, where it performed with absolutely no problems. Nix that idea, I suppose. I'm guessing it may be a grounding problem in my house. But has anyone else experienced this, or have an idea what may be going on? My next move is to take it to different venues and try it out to see whether the problem persists. Haven't gigged out yet, but I really don't want to take it to a gig and have this noise override my tone.

Thanks in advance,
Dave in Cleveland

Upon receipt of my brand new Blues Deluxe Reissue, I experienced a "ringing" similar to what you described. It was more pronounced at higher volumes and for specific frequencies (notes). I did not have the hiss that you mention, but the ringing sounded like a loose tube (it wasn't).

It turned out that my problem was a bad (or perhaps all three bad) pre-amp tubes (12AX7). I replaced them all with new Tung Sol brand 12AX7's and the problem went away. It would have been covered by warranty, but I live so far from an authorized Fender rpr. cntr. that the cost of the tubes was less than what it would have cost me in gasoline or shipping and associated packaging. I bought it from Musician's Friend and they gave me the new tubes discounted for around $10 each rather than the normal $15 each. They're good on customer service.

If your amp wouldn't make the bad sound in the Guitar Center, perhaps you weren't playing it loud enough, or maybe if you used a different guitar, the frequency didn't cause the same problem. I guess it's also possible that the problem is not the same as the one I had, but if I had to guess, I'd bet on the pre-amp tubes.

I've purchased two new Fender tube amps in the past 4 yrs. and both had noisey, defective preamp tubes from the onset. So I guess, I'm paranoid about Fender's tubes!

Good luck, and tell us the outcome.

Thanks -- good solid advice. My only concern is that, again, it worked fine at GC, and we were cranking it. I'll let you know what happens.

I have found in pretty much every amp that I have ever purchased, I budgeted for new or at least different tubes. This is either because the amp was bumped around during shipping which could lead to a bad tube, an el cheapo tube that fails shortly thereafter or I just wanted to change the tone a bit. In your case, it sounds like a microphonic tube that you will just have to identify and replace. I had to replace a microphonic preamp tube in my Super-Sonic almost straight out of the box. Tubes are amazing devices! They can either last forever or crap out right away!

I would get the amp up to the volume level when you first noticed the issue and once you reproduce the problem, take a pencil and tap lightly on each tube using the eraser end to see if one of them reproduces the same noise. Remember that you will likely hear a small amount of microphonics from most if not all of the tubes which is normal but when you find the bad one you will know right away. Also, go easy when tapping on the tubes! You can even use the backside of your fingernail in a pinch but be careful not to touch a hot tube.

My Hot rod deluxe had a bad V2 pre-amp tube right out of the box. My amp had a low humming sound with nothing plugged in and all knobs turned down. I replaced the tube and all is well. My problem is a buzzing sound when I turn the amp up to 5 and hit low notes on the bottom e string below an "A" note. I metioned this on previous forums, but it seems I'm the only person in all of Fender world with this problem. I own 3 other Fender amps that do not do this. Nobody seems to want to help. Fender replaced the cab, the speaker and the reverb tank........still buzzes and everyone has given up on me..........anyone else have this problem?

Can't say that I ever had that problem, but have you actually reproduced the issue in the presence of you amp tech? If not, I would plan on doing this as you would be certain that the tech understands the problem and knows how to reproduce it for his troubleshooting and confirmation of the repair. If you have done this already, I would probably try to find a new amp tech!

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! (for now, at least). Thanks to all for your input; Larester, you were dead on -- using the eraser technique, I ID'd two bum preamp tubes and replaced them. Hopefully this fix will last a while, but again, many thanks.

You described my problem exactly with the Blues Deluxe Re-Issue. However my repair results are quite different. At first we thought it may have been a tube since the microphonics would cease if you put your finger on the tube. Replaced the tube, NO JOY.

Found several poor and cracked solder joints on tube socket. Hissing noise also tracked down to a poor solder joint on a capacitor. Circuit board workmanship from factory is poor.

I am still peeling the onion with the problems on this amp. Suspect more culprits since I can still produce additional microphonic issues at loud volumes.

This is going to be a long troubleshooting road if we have to go after poor solder joints everywhere.
