Moral of the story; don't use a sledge hammer to swat flies.

Thanks for the review and insight AaronK. :)

Onre more trick I've seen. Replace all 6L6GC with good quality 6V6GT. Bias to 8 watts idle dissipation per tube. Be sure you have 6V6GT that can take 450VDC on the plates. NOS or JJ6V6S.

Tone with be something between a 5881 and a true 6V6GT amp. Browner mid, Not as thunderous bass. More mellow high notes. Check for red-plating on first few fire-ups.

Just a crazy thought....

How would that affect output impedance?

Any alteration to the layout of the output tubes = effect the impedance. YOu can try this as long as the impedance of the speaker aren't above 16-ohms. You'll be surprised how LOUD four 6V6GT can be.

Another amp maybe the best solution for home practice and studio. Here's one on EBay now. Not related to brother, er... seller

+1 BMW2002Ti, great idea

I tried the GT 6V6-S, JJ 6V6, and EH 6V6 (both EH and the GT-EH), in my HRDlx. Only the GT-S and JJ were rated enough for the HRDlx, but of course the EH sounded the best as they were more like a 6V6 sound than the GT-S or JJ. The EH held up just fine even though the screen and Plate voltages in the amp were higher than the tubes ratings. I didn't push my luck with the EH 6V6, just an experiment, and went back to 6L6.
