What should I use to get the measurements, would any ruler work? thanks man!

For working on instruments I keep a couple of calipers on hand -- one to measure outside diameters, one to use on inside diameters -- and a 6-inch steel rule graduated in both SAE and metric increments (you may find that millimeter measurements are quite handy for setting the height of your pickups).
