If I plug in an extension cab that is rated at 16 ohms in the back of my DRRI, is that a no no? Ive been told so many f ing things I just dont know what to believe anymore! Was the external output made specifically for 8 ohm cabs?

If you are referring to a '65 Deluxe Reverb' which is a 22 watt tube amp with 1X12" speaker (8 ohm) and no additional extension speaker jack: I assume you are talking about disconnecting the internal speaker and using the 16 ohm cab instead. Placing a larger load (16 vs 8 ohms) will not harm the amp (the same cannot be said for decreasing the load, although some will argue it's OK within a factor of two for a tube amp). The amp may be slightly underpowered to take advantage of the cab, and may distort more due to 'working' it harder, but no damage should occur. The other factor affecting your sound is what wattage was the cab designed to handle, but this doesn't cause any damage to the amp.

If you are thinking of a "Y" connection and using both the internal speaker and the extension cab, the total load drops to 5.3 ohms which would be below what is recommended and the imbalance would send twice the output to the internal speaker as to the cab.

I am talking about the 65 deluxe reverb reissue which does offer an external speaker output.

OK, If your amp has an 8 ohm internal speaker, and a jack to utilize an additional external speaker simultaneously, the additional output connection would be designed for an 8 ohm load so that there would be balance between the two. This would result in an overall total load of 4 ohms seen by the amp with the extension speaker plugged in.

If you plug in a 16 ohm speaker cab, the overall load would be 5.3 ohms, and since this is not below the 4 ohms that the system was designed for, there should be no damage.

However, you would have imbalance and I wouldn't think that the sound would be good. But I would be interested in knowing if you have already tried this, if the ext. cab seems to be as loud as the internal speaker and if it sounds good to you.

If you have plugged in the ext. cab and disconnected the internal speaker, overall system load is, of course, 16 ohms. It would be like using the combo as a head. With the larger load (which is not harmful), you would probably have somewhat greater distortion for the same volume and the combination would be less efficient, but it may be to your liking. I have never tried this scenario, and would like to hear about your results.
