I got no beef with with mom and pop shops. The reality of it is that here where I live in So Cal, there are not many mom and pop shops around anymore. When I was young, you would have to go to a larger, more professionally stocked business to get effects, etc. I did not know what these things even were when I was a young kid. I did not know the brands or models of guitars, amps and so on. As a grown up young man, with cash for the goods is when I began to find out and, understand the true value of these mom and pop shops. One of the ones which I really miss was in Costa Mesa but, now it is gone for good! Not only did they carry good tubes and other handy stuff but, they had a whole giant selection of great used amps! All brands, sizes and more. They did not have any great guitars or selection in them though! It was mostly used amps.

I travel a lot in my job, industrial sales, and like to go the local GC where I am staying in the afternoon after work to play and just try out new stuff. Yeah there are some working there who aren't so tuned in with my preferences, blues versus say a metalhead salesman, but most of the time they are very helpful. I don't claim to be a walking encyclopedia of every guitar ever made and I don't expect them to be. I used to use mom and pop stores but they never had the selections and many didn't want you touch the instruments unless you could prove you were a serious buyer.

The person who answered the phone, referred to in the OP, is just a receptionist. If you are calling about guitar amps as for the guitar deparment, if you are calling about PA stuff ask for the sound department, etc. I friends son just started working there in their sound department, he has a degree in sound engineering and I can guaranty he knows more than most of the band people there who run their own sound.

Give em a break, if you don't like shopping there then don't. But for man it's great having a local store with such a wide selection and the ability to actually play before you buy.
