I called my local guitar center to make sure they had a DRRI in stock for me to try out with my Strat. I was floored at how the conversation went.

"me: do you have the fender deluxe reverb reissue in stock? gc: uhh, <long pause> i don't know let me connect you to accessories... me: accessories?... do they now handle amplifier sales?... gc: it's an amplifier?"

Don't be too hard on the sales staff. If not for GC, most vo-tech dropouts wouldn't have any job at all.

The answer to that problably is, Unlike a small mom and pop shop, they have a person at a desk to answer phones and to make sure that you are not walking out with stuff without paying for it. most these ppl usually have no knowledge btw a deluxe reverb or a deluxe cheeseburger. if you happen to call a guitar center and, one of the sales ppl answers, then, it's diffrent story. i bought my deluxe stratocaster and deluxe reverb amp from guitar center.....Thats another story in itself lol...

The person answering thought you were talking about a reverb pedal most likely.

They get too much of my money already but, I like alot of their used gear! You get some deals but, when it comes to older gear, they're getting ridiculous with the prices. From what I've gathered if the stuff is not on police hold, then you can haggle. If the price is good on it and, it is still on police hold, get it before someone else does! I would love to find a silverface DR for a decent buy! That's on my list! Even a new 65' reissue would be sweet!

I don't buy new at GC. Used items that is hard find sometimes. Mainly used pedals. I call and make my deals online and get way, way better prices. All the used amps I bought had a problem, which is why they were traded in. I do look for a used amp deal, so I can take the tubes or speakers out of it.

I would rather the person defer to someone more knowledgeable, instead of to pretend that they know about something when they don't.

Wouldn't the employees at any given GC, in any given town, be a reflection of the community from which they were hired?

Around here, our GCs are loaded with cool and very knowledgeable employees. 8)

The Guitar Center in my town has the guitar area staffed with bassists. One guitarist. On the bright side, all the basses are set up pretty well...

I wish GC was around when I was a kid! There are pros and cons to mom and pop shops. I also wish I knew back then, what I understand now. I feel I'm still learning but, I'm not totally blind.

I find no cons at all with the Mom and Pop shops I deal with. As a matter of fact, one shop I deal with gives me better deals than most big box stores. You just need to build a relationship with them.
