1) Get the SuperChamp XD. It's a tube amp WITH effects and different voices that can apporximate the tone of other amps. Costs around $300. At 15 watts, it will allow you to enjoy the tube amp experience, practice at home, and have enough power for jamming with friends.

2) Without getting too deep, a tube amp uses tubes sometimes called valves (in Europe) in the circuitry. The importance is that many players like the tone and feeling of of the sound from tube amps better than solid state....which is what your mg amp is.

3) A blues junior costs about $450 new

4) If you get a superchamp XD you will not need an effects pedal because effects are built into the amp. Until recently...tube amps didn't have many effects other than overdrive and distortion, reverb and tremolo. Otherwise, there are so many different types of effects, that's hard to answer. Please take some time to search out information on the various types so that you can better understand them. Chorus, Phaser, Overdrive, Digital Delay, Distortion effects are a good starting point. Also..multi effects units are widely available that will have all of those and more in one unit.

Good luck and keep seeking out answers. That's how you learn.

Street price on a new Blues Junior is up to $479, but look around you can find used cheaper.

I suggest keeping the MG, it has headphone outputs so you can practice without bothering the neighbors.

Pedals are better than built in amp effects because you can switch them on and off and combine them as needed. Even though the XD has an optional footswitch, it has more limited effects than combining pedals. The upside is that the built in effects are cheaper than buying 4 or 5 pedals, you just lose some versatility.

Sorry....friends don't let friends play marshall mg's. Not for long anyway. Let's face it, most guys with mg's want to move on to nicer amps.

A lot of people buy the blues juniors. I'm sorry, I think they sound boxy, and sound unpleasant when overdriven. It's really the only Fender amp I just don't care for.

If you want a simple great sounding amp the Pro Junior is a great choice IMO as is the DRRI.....though they are different animals. Both do pedal effects very well. The Mayer sound has somewhat of a scooped out mid to it so the DRRI amp would get into that tonal range. Have to say though, as your budget is limited, you will need to look for a used one.

In fact, since $$$$ is an issue, I still recommend the superchampXD. On your budget....you just can't beat it.

Can't help you with a specific pickup except to suggest you dig into some of the pickup sites.

You don't have to use the multi-effects. The clean channel is almost as good as any Fender amp as far as I'm concerned. But, then again, I love the sound of the 6V6 tubes this amp uses. Very versatile with great tone. The MG is not in the same league IMO. Not even close.
