My amp regularly makes a loud "pop" when I switch it into standby. I know that's pretty common and I'm not worried about it being a problem or damaging anything.

But I'm having a good time fooling around with the amp these days and my obsessive nature makes me curious about "fixing" the pop cause it's loud and sometimes it goes through the PA between sets etc.

I did a search on the forum and found a few references to adding a capacitor with or without a resistor to the circuit to diminish the pop.

cursory discussion of that approach in this thread

I was wondering if anyone could be a bit more specific re: a mod that would eliminate this problem.

I'm no expert but I am familiar with the interior of the amp, have the service manual etc. and promise to discharge the caps before I go poking around....

thanks!

Anyone think this is a good solution to the problem?

"Put a .01 Ceramic disc or 600-V mylar between the two switch terminals (input to output), which would surpress any arc. It happens when voltages jump across the switch terminals before the terminals actually meet. "

I'm reading that as put a .01uF 600 volt ceramic or mylar capacitor between the two switch terminals on the standby switch.

I would use at least a .1 uF 1000V ceramic across the standby switch terminals. A poly or mylar cap at .047 or .1 at 1000V or 1600V would probably work fine also. Maybe overkill for the DRRI, and a lower value and voltage might be just fine, like a 630V orange drop or similar. A safety type suppressor cap would work also, they typically have the higher voltage ratings. A snubber might, or might not be better, with a .1 uF and 10 ohm resistor.

This would be a good opportunity to try some different values and see if any work better than the others.
