alright...here we go with a question on effects loop and power amp in .

a friend gas a fender princeton 112 plus. it has a font amp in jack. currently i have a carvin sx200-decent amp. when i plug my zoom g3 into my front jack, i get an ok sound. when i plugged it into the amp in jack on his 112, i got a much better sound. i used the fender model on the g3, and it was much closer to the tube sound-maybe because the pre-amp in the 112 is being bypassed.

my question is this- if you use the effects loop on an amp, are you bypassing the pre-amp?
if you plug your guitar into the processor, and then into the effects return channel, are you bypassing the pre-amp?

i wonder if the loop is the same on all amps, or if the way they work is different
man...i have so much to learn

Not all loops are the same, some are series (most), and some are parallel. Usually, to bypass the preamp section of most amps that have a loop, plug effects or guitar straight into the return of the loop only, not using the send of the loop, and not using the amp's guitar input jack. The send is the preamp out in most cases, and using only the return will use only the power amp section of the amp, bypassing the preamp.

thangs shimm-
i put the output of my g3 into the loop reteurn on my carvin. it completely bypasses every front control, including the volume and reverb. i guess that answers my question. i am now going to have to play around, and see if i am happy with it. don't know how it will work out. it's just easier to adjust the controls on the amp than to change the settings on the zoom.

i get to have some fun 2night 8)

Cool, have fun!

Some amps sound better with the preamp bypassed, using an effect into the return. 8)

Each amp is different. Sometimes effects are better in the loop, sometimes better up front, and sometimes better into the return, bypassing the preamp. My HRDlx sounds better using a POD up front and not as good into the return, while the HRDvl 4x10 sounds great with the POD plugged straight into the return with its preamp bypassed.

Did you compare the effect in the loop vs up front?

+1 on the tube amp...

I have tried the Zoom g9.tt to get a tube sound, sold it, got four tube amps and a Weber Mini Mass 50 watt attenuater. Problem solved...
