I recently acquired a Fender Power Chorus amp. I believe it's a 1990 w/2 12" speakers pushed by 400 watts. Problem is I have no idea how to use the amp controls to get the best results. You know, do's and don'ts.

Hello Wittkw01,

WOW

With an amp like that
I'd show my neighbors the love.

Cheers.

:) I purchased my Fender Power Chorus amplifier back in 1991. This stereo amplifier actually puts out 65 watts per channel. I too am looking at replacing the old speakers with new original or similar ones are showing signs of decay. This amplifiers sounded great with an acoustic as well as an electric guitar so I want to stick with the same speaker type if at all possible. Just need to know the speakers' model and stock numbers.

I have a Fender Power Chorus also. I bought it new in '89-'91 because of the clean channel sound. I hope this is the way to post about FPC amps... Anyway, I have a problem with both channels. After powering the FPC on, I can play maybe 5-10 minutes, long enough for FETs or OPAmps to get warm, and then power drops to less than half. I think maybe one of the stages, maybe even the preamp, is getting hot and saturating, basically acting like just a wire (no amplification) causing a drop in power.

One thing of note is that when this first started, banging away on a power chord would temporarily make the amp snap back to full amplification, and then it would eventually drop again after about 30 seconds.

This only happened to the Boosted channel at first, but now both are doing it, so it's not something common to both channels--ie. not final stage MOSFETS.

Is there a common problem with these amps having stages go out? Is there a part known to be more likely to go bad? I can replace FETs and such myself. I can't find a service manual, just a schematic, and I haven't done electronics as a hobby in some time, so I would need a service manual to find it on my own.

Any help is appreciated.

I'm thinking a thermal and/or vibrational issue affecting a cold solder joint. Pull the chassis and inspect all connections and traces on the PCB(s). Re-solder anything that looks wonky. As well, take a look at any ribbon connectors and ensure that they are correctly seated.

They are "Two 8 Ohm Fender Special Design 12 Inch (P.N. 025923) speakers."
