I purchased this amp about 3 years ago; Had a mod done to turn the speed knob into a tonestack (for more gain as you turn it up) and the intensity knob into a master volume. It was also retubed at the same time. I'm no tech by any stretch of the imagination but what I found is that this mod made the amp's 2nd channel almost sound like a very early Marshall (with the right pedal in front it sounds fabulous), but at the same time even with the tone stack at "1" the clean, chimey Fender tone is gone (think Jefferson Airplane, Jerry G, etc) which it had when purchased. I'm thinking of buying a 2nd one or a Showman/Dual Showman to use exclusively for the cleans, but I've been told to simply replace 2 of the the current preamp tubes with RCA 60's tubes from a reputable source (the 12AX7 in V2 and the 12AT7 in the "last slot") .

I'm wondering what thoughts forum members can contribute before I spend any more hard earned $$$ ?

BTW, I'm using a repro 2-12 cab from MOJO (the smaller one) loaded with Eminence Patriot Cannabis Rex w/ hemp cones.

Thanks,

JR

Does the "mod" affect the signal chain through the NORMAL channel?

If not, use it for your clean needs and switch between the channels using an A/B/Y stompbox.

As the owner of three vintage Bandmasters ('66, '67, and '68), I find them to be pleasing in tone and ample in power in dead-stock guise -- I use a Zoom amp simulator for alternate voicings.

Arjay,

I did try going into channel 1 (normal) the other day. No luck. Chime gone.

I really like the sound of my Bandmaster back to AB763 specs -- it's got that Fender Chime. For dirt, crunch or leads, I use a Timmy, Barber Direct Drive and a Keeley Katana Boost. Best of all worlds.

Cheaper and less gear to haul than another amp. I've had to bring both my bigger Fenders to gigs where a guest guitar player is using one -- it's too much for one guy.
