I just bought a new Blues Jnr III - and anything beyond '2' on the volume and I get distortion - with the Master Volume wide open at '12'.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? The dealer in Bangkok suggested it is because I was using a Les Paul!

What about if the Volume control is at 3 and the Master control is at 3?

The blues junior (at 15 watts) doesn't have a whole lot of clean headroom. If you play loud, you're likely to get at least some distortion.

You may need to consider a different amp.

The BJr clean, with EL84, is not the same as a Deluxe clean with 6V6 or 6L6. And using a guitar with hum-buckers will certainly cause distortion sooner than single coils. How hot are the pups in the LP?

Thanks for the replies.
My mate has a Blues Jr, and he plays a Les Paul with 59 re-issue pickups. My pickups are the burstbuckers. He gets a way, way more clean than I do! Mine is distorting like a fuzz box at '3'! My mate plays his live at our gigs - great sound - punchy and warm. I simply cannot get the 'sparkling' clean tones that are classic Fender...

That makes sense. The BBs are higher output pups. Not sure if you're talking about the Seymour Duncan '59s or some other '59. In any case, I'd start by looking for some lower output pups. Something classic.

Could be biased hotter than usual too. I do agree that hot pups will overdrive the amp a lot earlier. Turn the guitars volume down a bit and it should help. Lots of folks forget about the guitars volume control. My Gibson LP 60's Tribute with P-90's will do the same thing. I use it to my advantage. I can go from clean to serious growl with a turn of the volume knob.

hmm, have you tried swapping a 12AY7 valve in V1? That should give you more headroom. With the MV on my BJr at 12, i can turn my volume up to ~6 before my humbuckers start to distort.

Thanks again for all the replies.
FYI - I played thru my mate's Blues Jr and it is like a world apart from mine. On his amp, with my Les Paul, I can turn up to around 5 and have a pretty clean sound. On my amp, '3' or more and it's not usable. I read somewhere about the ribbon connector from the valves being a possible cause of this...
Anyway - thanks guys - I have sent it back and I'll see what they say!
Keep rockin' everybody!
