Bit of a follow on from a previous thread I started regarding some mod work to my BDRI. Sorted out my choice of tube, it's just the speaker I can't decide on. Narrowed it down to a Eminence cannabis Rex or a Weber 12F150. I ve read all the reviews going and various threads but still no nearer to decision. I know there plenty of love here for the C Rex but would like some feed back regarding the weber.
I'm after a tighter, punchier bottom end and a less harsh top end than the current stock speaker.
Many thanks in advance.

Emi CR is a very warm speaker, sounds great in a bright amp. Nice tight lows and very sweet highs... so if that's what you're after go for it. Sorry, no experience with the Weber.

strangely enough, i have yet to plug in a 12F150, a few 12A150's and they are amazing !

But thats an alnico with a whole different attitude so........

Weber does not make a bad speaker and you can bet, its warm and sweet !

On the other hand I have used C-rex's in DRRI's and extension cabs and really like them !
and they are cheap in comparison, 50 watts of warm sweet tones with a very forgiving top end, i've heard people say they are too dark, maybe in an allready dark amp, i love the C-rex in a fender amp.

I have a C-Rex in my Blues Deluxe Reissue and I am digging it...
Here is what mine sounds like http://youtu.be/udVOgyQHexQ
I also put one in my Blues Jr.

I would like to try a Celestion Alinco Gold in it though....

Good luck with the Weber. Think you'll like it. I've replaced the stock 12-inchers in several DRRI with the alnico Vintage Weber 12A125A and -150. Biggest single improvement in those amps, for sure.

Beautiful tone on that vid.

Did you have the chorus and phaser going as well as the delay?
Which parts got you closest to that tone, the delay, emg's, speaker, chorus?

Thanks

Fitted it plus some new tubes today. Sounds fantastic.
I know it's totally subjective but it's gives me the sound I was after. Tight and punchy bottom end. Ever so slightly mid focused that really grinds when you dig in. Clear highs that are mellow and not shrill or brittle in the slightest. Not once was I looking to back the eq treble off. For me it ticks all the boxes and more.
Baring in mind that the speaker has to break in and it was changed with a combination of new tubes. It's totally transformed my amp from one that was up for sale to a definate keeper for a while at least. Was grinning like an idiot doing a pride and joy solo. :D

Awesome.Just what I wanted to hear. I bought my Weber from them pre-broken in for no extra charge. Just waiting for the resistor to arrive to bleed off the caps before I install. Pulling my hair out now!!!

With the power switch off, turn the standby on. This drained the capacitors on my BDRI. With a meter across the capacitor you can watch the voltage drop off to a safe level.
I know this is not the proper way to do it. But It works.
Attatch the meter leads with crocodile clips to either side of the capacitor one at a time. Then switch standby on with power switch off. With your hands free you can watch the voltage drop off.
This method was something I read and gave a try. So the amp techs here may confirm or deny if this works as a safe practice. But I was careful and I'm still alive.

Thanks for the tips. I haven't played through my HRD almost 2 weeks now due to long work hours. If I set my meter to DC, do I set it at 200? What do you set your meter at?

Yes DC and the 200 volt scale is fine. Mine had also been off for about 2 weeks. Had about 25 volts in capacitor. I got it down to almost zero using the above method.
Not sure if the HRD is indentical to my BDRI, but it's the furthest large capacitor on the left if you looking in from the rear. There is a vid on you tube showing the correct one to drain.
