Hey guys, first post here.

I just got a used Hotrod Deluxe from Guitar Center last week and things were great up until 3 days ago when it started hissing at about vol lvl 2, but more noticeable at lvl 4 and VERY LOUD at lvl 12. It does this on both channels and also with or without anything plugged into the amp.

I thought it was the footswitch, but it wasn't. I have replaced the preamp tubes one at a time, starting with V3, V2, V1 and this did nothing. I have bought a Monster HDP 850G and it has improved a bit but i can still hear the hiss. The hiss disappears under 2 conditions: when the effects loop is connected and when the EQ is set all the way down ( as soon as the treble and mid knobs are turned up, it starts hissing again ).

Do I need to take this amp back??

Thoughts anyone?

Hi danusmcanus,

Do you have any warranty? There might be only a limited time, if any, to return it, so check with GC about a return before you are stuck with it and have to work on it yourself.

If you want to work on it yourself, I have a couple of thoughts. With nothing plugged into amp or loop, and the the amp power turned off, remove V1, power on amp and check for hiss. If you still have hiss, power amp off, replace V1 and remove V2, power amp on and check for hiss. If you still have hiss, power amp off, replace V2 and remove V3, power amp on and check for hiss. Easy enough to try for a start, to see if the problem can be isolated to a certain section of the amp. Also, any difference with the reverb turned all the way down?

Just wondering what you are plugging into the pre-amp out / power-amp in that is making the hiss disappear.
Whatever you have in that loop is passing the full signal ?

Could be dirty EFX jacks. Spray some de-oxit into them and work a plug in and out of each. Also clean tube sockets. Spray pins and work tubes in and out. Rule out the simple first!
