Would like to ask forum members about Fender amp circuit model PR266 on a 1997 Fender "The Twin."

I bought "The Twin" new in 1997/98 here in Canada. It's been a great amp, and the product literature says it based on the Twin Reverb and more. I recently bought a used 65 Twin Reverb reissue and there is a very big difference in the sound. I don't mean power, I understand the 65 TRRI is 85 watts, The Twin is 100 watts, but I never get close to those peak levels. "The Twin's" speakers (Eminence Special Design) wired for 16 ohms, the TRRI (Jensens) for 8 ohms. It's just that I don't hear the Twin Reverb foundation in The Twin. Playing The Twin again last night it sounds like it's very compressed, more of a very distinct pro sound, audiophile-like. Reverb is very very good. Last year I had a reliable Fender amp tech replace all the power tubes with JJs and the PI. The TRRI while it has that lush reverb, has more of a throaty delivery overall in amplified sound (all with Stratocasters by the way). I know its an entirely different circuit, but how is The Twin based on the Twin Reverb? I like the sound of The Twin albeit, and I have a Super Reverb reissue, the modded Custom Vibrolux Reverb, as well as a DRRI, so I can get Twin Reverb sounds fine, especially with the Super Reverb. I don't use the drive channels on The Twin, Channel 1 has that unmistakable Fender sound. But what's with circuit PR266 and can it be modded to Twin Reverb specs? The tone stack on The Twin doesn't seem to be as sensitive to minute changes on the dial like the Twin Reverb. Especially when you want to get that real bass thud/bottom end from a Stratocaster like the Twin Reverb can deliver. What do you think?

Hi blakestyger,

The number "PR266" is not a circuit number, just the amp model designation. Circuit numbers will be like "AB763" for a TR, and "6GA8" for Twin, just as examples. There are several different circuits for each amp model.

You can find most of the schematics for the amps that you mentioned here:
http://www.prowessamplifiers.com/schematics/fender/

The tube charts inside many of the amps give the circuit number. Compare the schematics for similarities and differences.

BTW, different tubes in each amp will contribute to the sound differences also, on top of any circuit differences. "Based on" doesn't mean that it's the same.

Thanks for the info shimmilou on amp model design; unfortunately there is no tube chart inside the amp box so I can't identify the circuit number/spec. I checked the Prowess Amps website link you sent, but again no matching layout.

This version of the amp has no tremolo which Fender later introduced, but the last three knobs on the front panel, to the far right are, in order, Mix, Reverb, Presence.

Perhaps you have the "Evil Twin"? You did say '97, duh! No separate layout, but the schematics here:

Note: two links, schematics and manual.

Thanks shimmilou, got it, that's the amp, circuit is E45 apparently and yes made in 1997, didn't know the amp is called the Evil Twin, thought that label referred to the red knob ones. Thanks for your help.

Re: 1997 Fender "The Twin" amplifier
Can anyone tell me which two valves are for the reverb--if you can tell me the actual physical location based on the where the the Main output tubes are I will find them, if you tell me P1 P2 etc I wont as I dont know the positions.
Standing at the back of the amp looking down on it(as if looking through the top) the valves are positioned
12ax7a --12ax7a--12at7--12at7--12at7--12at7
12ax7a---12at7 then 6l6--6l6--6l6--6l6

thanks
