Hi everyone,

I've got a Hot Rod Deluxe, and want to drain the filter capacitors to work on it. It says on Justin Holton's page that I need a 10w 25K ohm cement resistor.

These aren't so easy to find in UK and I don't know of a company I can call to order exactly what I want.

Anyone else in UK know where I can get one? I don't want to pay for shipping from the US!

Do I actually need a resistor of that rating or can I use something else?

WOuld this one be OK? http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/783626 ... 25k0e.html
I can't tell if it's coated in cement or not... Does that matter?

Any of your expert advice would be great as I don't want to be electrocuted and die!

Hi bluehemisphere,

The resistor that you linked to will work just fine. You can use just about any type of resistor that has a reasonable resistance and wattage rating. The resistor can get hot, the higher wattage is best to be able to dissipate the heat without burning. After using the amp, you can switch the amp off with the power switch, leaving the standby switch on, and the caps will usually drain to a reasonable level, then unplug the amp from electricity before using a resistor to drain the caps further if needed. Always check with a meter to be sure that they are drained to 20 volts or less, they won't get to zero. Be sure to remove your resistor before switching the amp on. Normally, switch the standby switch off first before switching power off, no need to drain the caps for normal use.

Hi

If your in the UK just go to any electrical component shop with that info or for a slightly easier life either check the Maplin electronics webpage or go to a shop if theres one near you. If you "need a few bits" Maplin is a good way to go cos they will mail it to you.

Ordering 1 resistor is equally easy. Power rating and value more important than what type it is.

... Al (in the UK)

Make a probe out of a test lead. Clip one end of the resistor into the alligator clip, wrap the clip and resistor leads with electrical tape, leaving only enough lead exposed for probing the socket positions of output tube socket. Clamp the other alligator clip to the chassis and probe each position. Use a multimeter and check for voltage. Probe and check until voltage is gone or low enough to live with. If you aren't checking for voltage you shouldn't be inside the amp! There are only 2 pins that will have high voltage but, to alleviate making a mistake check all in the socket.
