So I have read the biggest shortcoming in the blues Jr is the speaker. I happen to have a couple celestion seventy 80s laying around. Because I'm not too knowledgeable on speakers I was curious if one of these would be an improvement over the stock eminence design.

Thanks in advance

Try them and see. Its not that hard to swap them and your opinion is the only one that counts.

I didn't know what the assumed difference would be. If it was even worthwhile to try. Again my knowledge in speakers is quite slim

If it's a mk1 or 2 BJ, you will notice a distinct improvement putting in that Celestion. Trust me on this and do it without delay..

But check the depth of the new speaker first - it's tight in that cabinet.

The harshness goes away, clarity is considerably improved, the reverb sounds like reverb rather than echo-ey mud and your EQ controls actually start doing something predictable!

To be fair, I fitted a Celestion V30 into my mk2 to get those improvements rather than a Celestion 70/80, so I can't talk in detail about your intended replacement. But I'm sure you too will reap sufficient rewards that will justify your efforts..

Other opinions seem divided on the 70/80 - some call them cheap Celestions and say they sound like it when pushed hard. But the BJ is only 15watts so it's unlikely you're going to drive them into any sort of tonal distress! On the other hand, Traynor fit them into their combo amps as the stock speaker, so they must rate them.

Has to be worth a try - it's easy to change them back if you don't like what they do in the Fender..

I put a Celestion G12P80 in mine (regular v II), and got more low end, richer and darker sounding compared to the stock Eminence, and sounds great. For even better sound, use an external speaker in a closed back cab.

Here are some BJr speaker comparisons and tips for changing speakers.

Will a closed back cab increase bass? That's really what I'm looking for I guess. _

Yes, quite a bit more bass with closed back cab. The difference can be like night and day, depending on the speaker in the cab. The G12P80 that I put in my BJr came from a closed back ext cab, and in that cab it had too much low end and was lacking highs. Putting the stock Eminence into the ext cab was a perfect match, the Eminence had much better low end response in the closed back cab as compared to when it was in the BJr cab. As mentioned, the G12P80 sounds better in the BJr cab than it did in the closed back cab, no "boxy" sound at all. Now I use the Eminence speaker in the closed back cab with many other amps and it sounds great. :D

I had a 70/80 from a Marshall DSL40C (which was way too bright) and tried it in my cream board BJ and was pleasantly surprised! This is after having a C Rex, Greenback, GB128 at various stages. So far, this has the best balance of cleans and crunch and is slightly less boxy.
