Funny you should ask, A big Brown truck visited me today out of the blue and delivered a quad of Ruby 6L6GC-STR tubes from Egnater

No note, no e-mail, thay just showed up.

As you can imagine I had already replaced the tubes so........

I don't hate egnater, still want a rebel 30 to try out.
Definately going to work towards getting rid of combos and getting head and cab set ups.

I'm sure it was a mistake when they packed the box, stuff happens !

I did not really take much offense to bluesky's sigh as i am pretty sure that the same (dumb?) questions come up all the time. What i was meaning to ask was, i have read on other amp forums and tube forums and i believe somewhere on a fender forum that if you replace your tubes with the same brand and color markings that, rebiasing is not necessary. Thats the 1st time i ever heard of that. I am not trying to get away with not biasing my amp or anything tho, i do not have a biasing tool but i do own a fluke voltmeter and have experience working on electronics so, my plan for now is to run a new set of jj's into my deluxe and, find the procedure for biasing with just a voltmeter. As dumb as it sounds, I really love and cherish my guitars and my amps and, it is eating away at me knowing that my drrl is not working. even tho, all my other amps are working fine so, it is not like i am without an amp to play thru. Thanks guys for the responses and, lets all get along here lol...

I'll bet the "sigh" was not your question as much as the very fact that a tube company would even start that notion rolling throughout the tube swapping community.

Not one of us received the "gift" of tube knowledge and so everyone needs to learn, the tube resellers know better and are trying to sell their tubes as easier to swap.

Do the color codes mean you'll get the very best results without a bias check NO WAY !
However it will be within safe parameters and usable.

So for the true Tone nut (myself included) the answer will forever be to hook up our bias probe and multi-meter, spend about 30 to 40 minutes and get the very best from our tubes.

I have had very good success in getting exact replacements that "drop-in", from GT and other vendors such as thetubestore. Many places use color and/or number codes for matching. I have also received some mismatched, or faulty tubes occasionally, and tubes can be damaged during shipping. One way to know for sure that everything is AOK with new tubes is to check the bias of each tube where possible. Most vendors accept returns within a certain short period of time.

Generally speaking, considering no bias test point or adjustment on the amp, if the amp has been functioning properly, sounds good, and you replace with the exact same tubes, you'll be fine. There are plenty of amps being used that have no bias adjust or test point, and the users rely on the same replacement tubes being used in lieu of having to check the bias. Some of these amps can have shortened tube life if the bias is unreasonable from the factory (think BJr, Vox).

One option would be, if you know which tubes you will likely be using (ie favorites), get a matched quad, have the bias checked and make sure that the quad actually matches. With two of the quad installed in the amp and properly biased, you can be assured that the other two in the quad will drop right in without worrying about bias. Only have to check the bias once and be covered for the next several years or more. Tubes don't sour while sitting on a shelf. This is the same principle as getting the same replacement tubes from a vendor, but you've checked them yourself and can be more confident in the tubes performance.

A set of bias probes can cost about as much as paying a good tech to check the bias once. If you search this forum alone, there is a wealth of info about bias adjustment and how-to for several amps, including the DRRI.

Hey, if an engineer can check the bias on his own amp, it can't be that hard to do.
