I was wondering if someone can give me an idea as to how a Fender 65r compares to a Fender Sidekick Reverb? I mostly fool around with blues and was thinking of selling/trading my 65r and getting something else. Saw a Sidekick for $25.00. Money is definitely an object so I am trying to get the best sound I can for $200 or less. Thanks for any advice.

So you want to trade one cheap, out of production solid state amp for another cheap, out of production solid state amp. Why? Is there somthing wrong with your Frontman 65R? Have you played the Sidekick Reverb to know how it compares to your 65R?

I have a Sidekick 25, which sounds great, but it has a 10" speaker, to get one with a 12" speaker I need to find a Sidekick 35 or so. The sidekicks have fantastic reverb and lots of tone controls. I use mine to record by using it as preamp before and into an old distortion pedal which I turn all distortion controls to zero , that way it is effectively works as a compressor, then into a portastudio then into the computer. Works great that way. To play live even in the bedroom I prefer something with a 12" speaker. Still looking for a Sidekick Reverb 35 for the same reason you are.

Actually, if I had played through a sidekick I wouldn't be asking the question in the first place. Why do you even bother answering a post which is so obviously unworhty of your time? Cheap is a very relative term to be throwing around. A person might assume you're just some trust fund baby to whom price is insignificant so long as you get what you want. The rest of us need to live within more or less limited means. Thanks for your help.

I answered because you didn't say why you want to change amps. Is something wrong with the 65R or do you just not like the tone? Why do you think the other amp will give you what you want? What kind of sound are you lookign for? There are plenty of other amps that are low price and are much better than either of the two you mentioned. Good luck in your search.

Oh, and regarding the "trust fund baby" crack? Don't I wish.

Sterling Cadsteel,

Re: Your PM to me.

Don't sweat it. Sorry if I came off as harsh. I was home for the last two days with a severe migraine and was not operating on all cylinders.

I have an older sidekick 35 and it still sounds good to this day.I never played through a 65r so I can't comment on that.My little 35 is plenty loud with the 12 inch speaker and it has a pretty good reverb and presence. It's also got a master volume...not bad for an older solid state.I'll never get rid of it.

I have had both of these amps, did not like either. Having said that I would stay with the 65r.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what I would wqant to replace it with but cost is definitely an issue. I'm not sure how to get it across, but the sound, while loud enough or even too loud, just comes across as "flat". Maybe a function of all solidstate amps?

In my opinion a sidekick for a low price is just what you are looking for, one of the 80s ones, because they have the gain control which spices things up quite a bit, and the reverb is way excellent like in the old days. Thing is, the sidekick 25 can play loud no problem, but that sweet blues-y sound only at low volume - starts to sound confused at higher volume. So in the bedroom it's fantastic but jamming with other loud players I would try the sidekick 35 or try to find an old all tube amp or a low power tube amp at low cost somehow, good luck. As you have seen most modern amps are flat sounding, shrill, and expensive, the solid state ones are just flat and insult the ears. And the hybrids are not better, just insult the ears.
Maybe you could try hellomusic.com They have a different deal on instruments everyday, on a certain day they may have something that will work for you.

I have a Fender Bandmaster and a Deluxe for playing out. I also have a Sidekick Reverb 65 (model 00014) and a Frontman 65R. I like them both for practice and small venues but I have replaced both 12" stock speakers with Celetion G -12 -P 80's for warmer tones. The Sidekick actually has a small reverb tank in it and I have replaced sprins in it. It seems reverb more lively than the 65R so I'd have to say I like it better for tone. Yhe downside to the Sidekick is that the power cord and the footswitch are wired into the circut so you can not unplug them. :)
