Heard about a new preamp tube by EH--12AY7. They say it reproduces the feel and tone of the Fender Tweed amps. Anyway, pulled out the stock tube and replaced it with the EH. Gotta say it's an improvement.

You think the EH sounds good, you should hear the NOS 12AY7 I put in my BDRI. But my tube cost me $40. NOS tubes are what Leo put in those great tweeds. How much did you give for the EH? I'm sure there is a considerable price difference. Glad you're enjoying the new sounds. Changing tubes is the cheapest way to experiment with tone chasing.

When Leo was putting tubes in his amps, they were brand new stock from US manufacturers, not NOS.

The EH 12AY7 costs about $20 and is Ok for a VCXD. I use NOS JAN GE 12AY7s in my BDRI and 5F6A clone.

Paid 15 and change for the tube. The improvement is priceless!
