Hi,

I have a Blues Junior lll that I got last spring.

I've noticed that when I have the Master Volume at 4 or above (I never have it past 6) I get a rattle noise when playing. I input volume or gain in some prefer would be set at 4 also. Is this noise "tube rattle". - Sorry if this is incorrect terminology.

I'm trying to achieve a decent clean tone so I hear the characteristics in my playing. I don't mind a little dirt as long as I can soften up my picking and the amp repsonds by cleaning up.

Let me know what you guys think it may be or if this is prone on Blues Junior amplifiers. - It's my first tube amp so I'm discovering as I go.

Thanks for your time.

- David

Hi theDavidAldred,

It could be tube rattle, or something loose on the cab. Make sure all of the screws are tight, including speaker screws which should just be snug and not over-tightened. To find out if it is tube rattle, try substituting a known good 12AX7 into each position, one at a time, or for output tubes try another set. Sometimes you can grasp the suspect tube and see if the rattle goes away or is less, being careful of the high temp of the output tubes (gloves). Have someone else play while you grasp each tube.

Perhaps tube rattle,
Or something in the room rattling.
Move it to a different room, see if that helps.
Or take it ouside and turn it up see if you hear rattle.
If you still do, set it up on a table, have a friend play it
And stand behind the amp with the preamp
Covers off
Use a chopstick touch the tube to see if it stops rattling.
Fender amps come with GTs EL84 I believe,
And 2-3 12ax7s sovtek GT labeled.
They're good tubes, but have they're occasional failure.

Yesterday I decided to dismantle my BJRlll.

One of the reverb spings were broken. I believe it was like this out of the box because I complained about it the day after I bought the amp from the music store. Because I'm inexperienced with tube amps and spring reverb I don't think I communicated my complaint properly so the sales guy told me it was just natural for the reverb tank to be noisy.

Anyhow I removed the broken spring and my rattle complaint is gone. I do hear the tube rattle sometimes but that's no big deal.

Thanks for the help. I only found the cause because you guys told me to check the tubes so I got ambitious.

Excellent. You've fixed the rattle but have now voided the warranty on your amp. On top of that, I can't believe that the reverb sounds any good now with one spring missing. You should have demanded a repair or replacement under warranty before messing with the amp.
