I have a few problems with my amp. I think it has some bad tubes and a blown extension cab speaker.

How can you tell the tubes are bad they seem to light up normally.

Also I pulled the speaker from the extension cab, it doesnt appear to be blown but it sounds like it is. Would there be anything else it could be?

make sure it's not the speaker jack on the amp. believe it or not it is possible the switch craft jacks can be manufactured with a defect. mine was.

Ignoring the extension speaker for a moment, why do you think the tubes are bad? What is the amp doing or not doing and what does it sound like? Is this an original Blues Deluxe made in the USA or the Reissure made in Mexico? They are different.

It has a little rattle in it when the volume is around 5+.
I tapped the 12ax7's and one made a secreming moise and the other I could hear tapping.
The larger tubes seemed fine with no noise.
Its a blues deluxe reissue.

The "screaming" 12AX7 is prolly microphonic or the sockets have a cold solder. The one that "thuds" when tapped is prolly ok. As most any tube will "thud" if tapped hard enoough (I recommend not doing this). Rotate the two tubes and see if the "screaming" noise follows the tube. If so, you need to buy at least one new or good used 12AX7.

If the noise stays with the position and not follow the tube, you need to have the amp checked out further. Prolly some soldering issue. Or a bad socket.

Thanks, definately will try this.
I used an eraser from a pencil to tap it so it wasnt too hard.

+1 on all counts.

If you have the stock tubes, you might want to look at some new ones:

I use a 12AY7 in V1:

Have you ever had the bias checked/adjusted?

Has anyone used electro harmonix tubes?

It actually has 2 groove tubes and one soveteck which is the one thats acting up, seems like it doesnt fit in correctly. Im getting replacement this week.

The speaker in the extension cab is shot, I plugged it into my JC 120 and it sounds the same.

I've used one EH tube: their 12AY7. It was ok. No comparison to the NOS JAN GE 12AY7s I now use. EH tubes are made in Russia, probably by Sovtek.

I think the JJs are better in a BDRI.

Finally got the problems worked out. Got some new tubes in and the speaker was definately blown. The drummer in my last band was using my extension cab as a floor monitor, so thats probably why.

Put the electro harmonix tubes in, they soung better than the groove tubes in there, other than that everything sounds good.

Darn them drummers. No respect for real musicians. At least he didn't use it as a tom-tom.

To all you drummers out there: Just kidding. Ginger Baker and Gene Krupa are two of my favorite musicians. :D

I have a BDRI that I bought a few years ago and, for reasons I won't explain, it has remained un-used in my basement, with its cover on, for about four years now. I finally powered it up earlier today and have been playing it. I like the tone quite a bit. I'm playing an American Deluxe Strat HSS and a late 70s Yamaha SA2100 (ES335 copy) through it. I really quite like the sound of the Yamaha through it.

However, it's been manifesting a very annoying (albeit intermittent) problem on the Drive channel: a really bad static-like noise. It's not hardly noticeable below 4, but it gets progressively worse above that. At 8 - 12 it's downright terrible. Even at 5 - 8 it's very annoying. And it comes and goes. It will be quite quiet for several minutes, and then, bam!, it comes right back.

This is my first and only tube amp, so I don't have any experience with the idiosyncrasies of pre-amp and power tubes.

Any ideas on what could be causing this noise and how to go about getting rid of it?

(Incidentally, it happens no matter what guitar I play through it, so I know it's not any of my guitars.)

Thanks...

My WAG would be you've got one or more cold solder joints somewhere and the symptoms manifest themselves only when the chassis, and hence the PCB, starts to vibrate when you play the amp at the higher volumes. It could also be one of the ribbon cables not fully seated in its connector or a microphonic tube.
