Hi all. First of all i would like to say that i apolpogise for this not being Fender related, but i would very much appreciate some input from your wealth of valuble knowledge.

I ve always had combos just starting venturing into the world of heads and cabs.
I tried a H&K 18w Tubemeister yesterday and vas very impressed and are probably going to get one. I do have a concern regard the output being sufficient enough to cut cut through the mix with our occaissionaly heavy drummer, but after spending a couple of hours with one and a Orange 2x12 cab loaded with Vintage 30s i reckon i should be ok.
But, i know the the Vintage 30s are regarded as being a louder than most, and an efficient speaker, But i did find them a bit harsh sounding.
I ve read various reviews (yet to try them), that the Vintage 30 and G12h is a good mix and not as harsh sounding with a better, smoother, more rounded sound coming from the G12h.
Because i do have a slight concern regarding the overall volume of the 18w. If the Vinatage 30 and G12h were both rated at 100db, would it still cut in the mix and the G12h maybe not as loud as the 30 given the same ratings and specs? Ohms, db rating etc.
Im not after clean head headroom. Even my clean now i try and get a little bit off grit in it. Play mainly blues/blues rock. So im after more of a tight warm sound, that cuts but not brittle. But van still have that vintage vide with an EQ tweak.
I think im there with the amp, but because of my lack of exp with cabs i would like a steer to help me get the blend right.
Thanks in advance everyone.

A friend has a G12H greenback and a Vintage 30 in his Matchless Chieftain. Really sounds pretty good. I loaded the amp with Mullard ECC83 and xf1 vintage EL34's. Really has a "British" almost Bluesbreaker tone. Very nice.

Because they're both rated at 100db, the loudness will be the same. The wattage rating is how much power they can handle without blowing up. But the power rating also gives you a clue about whether you will get speaker distortion. As you start pushing a speaker to its limit, it will start breaking up, which can make a positive contribution to the tone. The G12H30 is 30W and the V30 is 60W. Since your amp is 18W, you will get at most 9W across each speaker (assuming they are the same impedance--8ohm, 16ohm, etc), so you won't come close to pushing either one. Now, a Celestion Blue--famous in Vox amps--is only 15W, so a pair of those would get pushed. But may not be the tone you're looking for. And the Blue is expensive.

So it comes down to what you're looking for in a speaker to compliment your amp's tone. For example, if the amp with a lot of highs you might want a speaker that has good bass and mids and more restrained highs. Or vice versa. I'm not familiar with the H&K Tubemeister. And of course it depends on what kind of music you play.

If you can spare $100, but a G12H30 and put it in the Orange cab. Mic each and record and you'll hear the difference. Or spend $200 and buy two. Or spend $200 and buy one G12H30 and one G12M (known as the "Greenback"). I just did those comparisons in my 2x12, it was interesting. :)

Why not a 2X12 cab w/ a V30 and a G12H? That's what I have and feel that the two speakers compliment each other very well. Both have a 100 db sensitivity, so you'll get maximum sound level from your 18 watt amp.

I also have a 2X12 cab w/ WGS speakers in it: a Reaper HP (99 db sensitivity) and a Retro 30 (100 db sensitivity). Can't speak for the availability in Great Britain, but here's the website: http://wgs4.com/all-products (Soundbytes here to listen to) This pair was supposed to be replacements for the Celestion V30 and G12H, but I don't think they sound much alike. These are warmer/ somewhat darker and a bit grittier. Nice sound, just different than the Celestions.

I'm a huge proponent of the smaller wattage tube amps w/ quality speakers. They will get loud. For high sensitivity speakers (100 db), it only takes one watt per speaker to get 100 db @ 1 meter distance, so if your drummer overpowers them, he's a major problem, not the amp. He is a threat to your hearing health.

Sometime back, there were demos on YouTube comparing various speakers. A little searching there may be helpful.
