Just got this amp two days ago -- my first tube amp -- so I have a rookie question. I've read so much conflicting information about how to turn the amp on and power it off, so I'm looking for somebody to please tell me the correct way to do this.

The store I purchased it from told me when I want to turn it on, first turn on Standby, let it pre-warm the tubes for a minute, then turn on the Power Switch.

To turn it off, they told me to hit the Power switch, then let the Standby remain on for a minute or so to allow the tubes to cool down, then turn the Standby switch off, too.

The problem with that is that the operating instructions that came with the 65 Delux Reverb from Fender state, "The Power switch must be ON for the Standby switch to function."

If that's true, then it serves no purpose to turn the Standby Switch on for a minute to "pre-warm" the tubes, because the Standby Switch doesn't function without the Power Switch being on!

Can somebody please tell me the correct sequence for turning the amp on, then turning it off?

Thank you.

Start
Both switches in the off possition

Turn the power switch on thirty to 45 seconds is enough
move the standby switch to the exact same possition as the power switch (up)
Now full power is flowing through your tubes and your making tunes !

Turn off in reverse, shut down the standby (literaly) let tubes cool a few seconds then turn Off (Down) the power switch.

Now to muddy the waters a bit, a lot of players leave the standby switch in the Up ready to play mode all the time and power on and off using the power switch only.
Your DRRI is tube rectified and so in theory it does not need the standby warm up time.
Enjoy your new amp !

I'm not sure I'm posting this reply correctly, but assuming I am, thank you for your replies! This is my first "Lounge" posting and I'm really impressed with the speed of the responses and helpfulness. Leave it to Fender to get it right! Many thanks!

Not to confuse things too much, but relating to the Shut-down procedure, a Carr Amps tech once told me to turn off the Power Switch first (before the Standby) which allowed the capacitors to drain. Since the amp was based on the DR, perhaps the logic applies.

Think of a light switch, simply on or off. An "open" switch is off, and a "closed" or "engaged" switch is on. The power switch on the amp controls the AC electricity to the amp from the outlet. The standby switch controls the high voltage DC in the amp for the tubes. When the standby switch is off (high voltage disconnected from tubes), the tubes are not passing the idle current even though the filament (orange glow) is still on keeping the tubes warm but not hot, and therefore the tubes are cooler than when the standby is on. So the standby switch can also be useful during short breaks.

I think that these conversations with techs should be recorded/written down, so as to eliminate the confusion. The OP possibly simply reversed what he was told, going from memory of technical talk that he wasn't familiar with, common mistake considering it may not have been explained all that well to him to begin with. Obviously, turning on the standby switch first results in nothing, no power to output tubes, no filament supply so no glow from tubes, easy to see. And some techs comments can be taken out of context, sometimes we can only remember part of the tech-talk.

As far as turning off with power switch first (leaving standby on) to drain the caps....yeah, when you want to drain the caps, as in for servicing the inside of the amp. You want to be sure that the caps are drained of their charge before working on the amp, but not for normal operation. Draining and recharging the caps constantly can do more harm than good, only do when necessary.

I also agree with blues bondsman post about the on/off procedure. Anyone can use an amp however they like, but using the procedure will help increase longevity of tubes and amp.
