bluesky636,

I just checked, and the amp buzzes when the cable is not hooked into it.

The amp uses a shorting input jack which shorts the tip connector of the jack to ground to eliminate any noise when nothing is plugged into the amp. You may just have a bad input jack or it could be something worse. Either return the amp to the seller for refund/exchange or take it to your nearest Fender authorized amp repair shop for warranty repair. Do not try and fix it yourself as you will void the warranty.

Power conditioners also help with "noise filtration, AC noise filtering to reduce radio frequency and electromagnetic interference (RFI/EMI)", rfi/emi can be in the picture here too! I got rid of all sorts of noise, including buzz, with a Furman power conditioner.

Also, if the amp is plugged in without a cord attached and it still buzzes, yes, the issue is most likely in the amp, but the problem could also be in the wall plug or further down the circuit. So, a wall plug ground tester should be used before digging into the amp, correct?

Power conditioners only help with problems caused by the power line, that's why they are called "power" conditioners. They will help with ground loops, "dirty" power on the input power line and interference picked up by the power line. They will do absolutely nothing to reduce or prevent problems caused by EMI/RFI picked up by the guitar or cable.

The OP has a single amp, no effects pedals, and no additional power supplies that can cause a ground loop. If the amp is siting there buzzing with nothing plugged into it and there is nothing wrong with the amp, there is a serious problem with the house wiring that needs to be fixed and not just covered up by using a power conditioner. If you have problems with the power lines coming into your house such as bad grounds or incorrect wiring you would be better off having the problem fixed rather than plugging in a power conditioner.

Thanks, bluesky636. I live in an apartment, and I doubt there is anything wrong with the wiring. I might just have to put up the white flag and return the amp. I guess you get what you pay for.

If it is the input jack as I suspect, it is not that big a deal. If it is somthing more inside the amp that is wrong, it needs to be dealt with. If there is an authorized Fender amp service center near you, I would take it to them. If not, your best course of action would be to contact the seller directly and discuss the issue with them. If they are an authorized Fender dealer, they will need to honor the warranty.

Holy Moses! I quoted Furman regarding emi/rfi.

And, I can tell you from my own experiences that the power conditioner does in-fact eliminate emi/rfi.

Heres a link:

Where on Earth did you come up with that misinformation???

No, you quoted a sales pitch from an on-line retailer.

Yes, as I have said several times, it will help reduce EMI/RFI that is introduced into the POWER LINE, NOT noise picked up by the guitar cable or guitar pickups and wiring. It is a POWER conditioner, NOT a guitar conditioner.

I have a degree in electrical engineering. I have studied the effects of power line noise on amplifiers and looked at ways to eliminate them. What is your degree in or do you just believe everything you read in a catalog?

The online retailer uses the materials from Furman to describe the item. It's an accurate sales pitch!

And it is a sales pitch none-the-less. Furman is in business to sell a product, therefore they will make whatever kind of pitch they need to in order to get you to buy their product instead of someone else's product. I have nothing for or against them. I am merely explaining what a power conditioner can and cannot do. The engineering behind a power conditioner is not magical. It is simply a collection of (usually) transformers, capacitors, resistors, and chokes. They are put together to try and clean up the incoming power. They will reduce and possibly eliminate noise induced into the power line from external sources. They will not reduce and certainly will not eliminate noise that is picked up by the guitar's pickups or wiring. That is an engineering fact whether you choose to believe it or not.

I'm done trying to explain this to you. Believe what you like. I really don't care.

I have a Vibro Champ XD that hums as well, even without a cable plugged into and it is plugged into a $300.00 Triplite Ac Line conditioner. Nothing in my studio makes this noise, it sounds like a transformer hum of some sort.

Although it does hum a little, it is a damn good practice/recording amp. I have mine hooked up to a Seismic Audio 1 x12 cab with a stock BDRI speaker. I usually leave it on the number 15 setting and overdrive it with a EH Soul Preacher, Hardwire CM2 or a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Mosfet and the reverb set to spring reverb. Sounds damn bluesy in the headphones when I mic it with a SM57 ran into my mixer. It will do the heavy stuff as well when I run my EH Soul Preacher and EH Big muff Pi with Tone/Wicker..

Here is a song I recorded with the guitar coming out of that amp...

Thanks for the reply, majorbytes. I was going to return the amp, but ultimately decided to keep it. The buzz is annoying, but I can live with it. I do love the tones I get out of this amp, and I think it'll be a good recording amp for my Garageband projects. I'll take a listen to your song soon!

Here is another song. I am over driving the Vibro Champ XD with an EH Soul Preacher and a EH Big Muff Pi with Tone/Wicker. I also have a EH Stereo Memory Man with Hazaria in the mix for the lead. I was using a Satndard Telecaster with the bridge neck pickup.
This is with the the stock speaker mic'd with a MXL 2003 condensor.
