All,

I recently purchased a new Fender Vibro Champ XD as a birthday present for myself. I just needed a basic practice amp that I could play at a relatively low volume in my apartment. For the most part, I like the amp, but am concerned about a low buzzing noise I keep hearing through the speaker when the amp is idle. I'm not very technical when it comes to amps, so I was wondering if someone could explain to me why I'm hearing this noise. Is there a relatively easy and affordable way to fix this so that I no longer hear the buzzing?

Prolly a loose cab, speaker, or chassis. Try tightening all screws first. Do NOT over-tighten! No luck? Insert playing cards into cabinet joints. One side at a time. See if that helps. Try inserting card(s) between grille and cab. See if you can isolate the problem this way.

Good luck!

Take it back to the dealer where you bought it and they will most likely exchange it under warranty.

Are you using single coil or humbucker pickups?

If you are using single coils, when the amp is idle, that "buzzing" noise is usually single coil hum you are hearing, and the "electro-harminox" Hum Debugger fixes that type of single coil hum, buzzing.

If you are using hum buckers and are hearing a buzz, there could be a wiring problem (improper ground, etc.) or a shielding issue (to prevent emf, etc.)

Well, I could return it, but I bought it from Amazon.

I have a strat, tele, and Gibson Les Paul Studio. Come to think of it, the buzzing may have been more noticeable when I played my strat or tele through it. I'll have to try each guitar out again to double check. My strat has Lace Sensor Holy Grail noiseless pickups in it, though, so it's hard to imagine I would have heard any buzzing from those.

What types of cables and effects are you using?

I'm just using a basic guitar cable. I don't know what brand it is off the top of my head. I'm not using any effects pedals, just the effects that are built into the amp.

When I switched to George Lynch cables (the best cable I can afford), a lot of single coil noise, the buzzing, went away. The Hum Debugger just ...debugs hum, completely. Yeah, the debugger colors the signal a bit, but in a good way and the colored sound is a lot more tolerable than the hum!

I'm just a hobbyist guitar player, so I never really buy top of the line guitar cables. I'll keep the George Lynch cables in mind, though. Thanks!

You're welcome!

If you start getting picky; a Furman power conditioner first, GL cables next, and then a hum debugger -- those pretty much take all the guess work out of single coil nose, some humbucker issues (usually lack of shielding or improperly done shielding)! If you got noise after all that, there's an amp or guitar shielding or wiring problem.

Easy way to tell if the problem is in the amp or guitar:

1. Unplug the cable from the amp. Does it still hum? If it does, it is the amp.
2. If it doesn't hum, try a different cable between the amp and guitar. If it doesn't hum, the problem is the cable.
3. If it still hums, the problem is in the guitar. Try another guitar. Even though your guitar has noiseless or humbucker pickups in it, you could have a bad ground in the guitar. Get it fixed.

Hum debuggers only mask the sympton, they don't cure the problem. If the noise is due to a bad guitar ground, you may eliminate the noise but you will still have a bad guitar ground. Fix it rather than hide it.

Power conditioners may help if the problem is due to a ground loop and the outlets of the conditioner are fully isolated from each other.

bluesky636,

I just checked, and the amp buzzes when the cable is not hooked into it.
