here is the finished project the green cab has a the weber alnico, the brown one has a eminence C-Rex (found on craigs list for 60 cash new in the box).

Pretty cool and they sound great too !!!

i kept the Bull Frog badges from an old PA speaker tower I Took apart for the speakers a while ago.

And this is what I'm playing, when in the same room is a DRRI, Egnater Tourmaster 4212, and an old Crate VC-5212T 6L6 powered amp.
I love the 5E3 on steroids sound this set up gives !!!!

Very cool indeed...

I had a chance to make some progress yesterday. I glued and clamped a few loose spots and isolated a few more spots than need the same treatment before proceeding with sanding, staining, etc. I did find some stain yesterday... a darker mahogany color than what it is right now. I think it'll look nice when it's all done... I'm keeping an eye out on eBay for grill cloth, when something catches my eye I'll grab it.

So, I've got a bunch of pedals for sale right now and once I generate some funds I think that I'm going to pull the trigger on a new Super Champ x2 head and Tone Tubby Speaker for the cab. I'd love to throw down for a nicer head but I think this one might be fun... I really like my Mustang and the amp models and effects on that, so I'm guessing they'll be nice on the X2 as well... and at 15 watts, a little friendlier on the ears than my TRRI or MIII. :)

blues bondsman said: "it read 4.7 OHMS and so I used the 4 ohm jack."

Meters measure DC resistance, not AC impedance. Resistance and impedance are both rated in ohms but they aren't the same thing -- a speaker's DC resistance is always lower than its AC impedance. The DC resistance of a 4 ohm speaker will be somewhere around 2~3 ohms. An 8 ohm speaker will measure around 4~6 ohms. A 16 ohm speaker will measure around 10~14 ohms.

If the DC resistance is 4.7 ohms, that's nominally an 8 ohm speaker. A 1:2 or 2:1 mismatch is generally safe and you probably won't hurt the amp or speaker by plugging an 8 ohm speaker into the amp's 4 ohm output. But plugging a 4.7 ohm (DC) speaker into the amp's 4 ohm (AC) output will reduce the amp's max power output and usually give you a slightly darker/middier tone.

I'd encourage you to try plugging your 4.7 DC ohms speaker into your amp's 8 ohm output -- it's entirely possible that particular speaker may sound better to you when running a mismatch, but it's more likely that it'll be louder, clearer, more responsive and dynamic when hooked up to the proper output.

I replaced the speaker cables and got it down to an even 4.0

Sounds perfect !

The VHT's have a 4, 8 and 16 ohm output
I can't believe how it sounds and is built and i got mine for 150 shipped on the bay.

The combonation of the 8 ohm C-Rex and the Weber alnico are a great match, one is super warm the other bright, nice balance !

Jam guy, don't forget pictures as you go along with your project.

Well, with spring break here, I have a afternoons after work free which is nice.... time to make some progress on the cabinet. I got the grill cloth the other day and stripped the old varnish off so I'm ready to stain and build a new speaker baffle and construct a back for it. I picked up a dark walnut stain and here's the grill cloth I settled on... I'll get some pics up once it starts coming together. Image

Got a few coats of stain on.... not as dark as I was hoping but am going to get another coat or two on today. Got a speaker ordered also... a Cannabis Rex. Then off to the lumber yard to pick up a sheet of plywood for the cab back and speaker baffle... things are coming together! I'll try and get some pics up soon...

Yes , I know there are a few of you waiting for pictures but I've been working out in a dimly lit garage... what few pics I've tried to take haven't really come out well so I'm holding off until work is complete or I get a sunny day to drag the cab out into the sun.

An update... staining and poly coats are done, baffle and cab backs are cut, and the speaker has arrived. At this point I'm nearing assembly phase, after I get the speaker hole cut... I will get pics up soon but with school back in session and working 40hrs a week, progress may be slower than planned.

Then it's time to shop for an amp head... I'd love to get something really nice but most of the heads that have caught my eye are WAY more than what a Super Champ x2 head costs and until I see how this cabinet project of mine sounds, it seems foolish to drop that kind of coin. I know there's a lot of science behind cab size, speaker choice, etc... and I took none of it into consideration, so my fingers are crossed! Maybe some progress pics and a report by the end of the weekend... cheers.

I'm all for Fender, however for a nice vintage tone (with good tubes) the VHT special 6 head can be had for about 150 bucks.

Mine sounds great with a vintage 6V6 Gt and a nice 12AX7.
Very much a blackface champ tone !

TADA...

Not a masterpiece but I'm happy with how it turned out given this was a first attempt at this sort of thing... I'm dying to try it out but alas, I haven't an amp that will work with it yet... darn Fender for not putting a speaker out on the MIII! Anyhow... here she is.

That is absolutely stunning!

I hate to say it, but this would look pretty cool sitting on top of it:

That turned out swell, JG!

Where'd that grill cloth come from?

I inherited a pair of Wharfdale Model 12 hi-fi speaker systems from my Dad and the enclosures could definitely use some new cloth. The stuff you've used looks quite similar to the OEM material on those circa 1963 cabs.

Rawk on!

I ordered the grill cloth from MojoTone... it's pretty heavy stuff, like braided jute or something. I think it looks pretty cool... 8)

JG...Holy Schmokes that came out great :!: :!: :!: I love the strat jack cup, nice touch.

Might I suggest a Egnater Tweeker sitting atop that? And it might be small enough to be stored in the bottom of the cab ala the old Silvertone Head/Cabs...just a thought!
