Before anyone gets all hot with me... yeah, I know this isn't exactly a Fender question but the master plan is to be playing one of mine through it eventually:)

So here's the scoop...

I went to the antique/junk furniture store with the little lady today and found this number and paid $35 bucks for it, thinking I could turn it into a kick___ extension cab. My questions are these...

1) Has anyone attempted such a project?

2) Is this worth pursing as a reasonable project with satisfactory outcome?

3) The baffle shown with the measuring tape is a little wider than 15", the baffle shown in the other pic of the backside of the cab is a little wider than 12"... would it be safe to assume that the original baffle is for a 15" speaker and the non-orig. baffle is for a 12" speaker?

4) Anyone know of a cool furniture restoration forum? I'm new at this sort of thing but the potential seems huge for making an absolutely fantastic piece of musically functional art.

Thanks a bunch! -JG

That looks like a really cool project.

I think your assumptions on speaker size are correct.

Bing turned up this:

Thanks, I just joined a furniture refinishing forum. Hopefully they'll be as helpful as everyone here has been over the years.

My big concern in this, making sure I can get thing solid enough so it doesn't vibrate. It's in pretty good shape over all but needs a little love in spots. I don't want to drop any $$$ on it if it's not going to function properly as an extension cab.

Would look pretty sweet refinished with a Gretta Sitting on top huh? 8)

great idea 8)

keep us posted with pictures as it progresses

as far as your concern about vibrations, i don't know if internal padding might help eliminate this. i'm sure some of the more speaker savvy members of the forum will chime in

good luck

Yeah, so long as everyone's cool with the topic of the post and where it's at, I'm happy to keep everyone updated.

I'm sure the hardest part for me will be deciding on a finish stain/ grill cloth color combo... I might darken it up a bit but I like the wheat colored cloth, or maybe something with a tinge of gold...

Another question... so with a cabinet with so much room, should I do an open back, closed back or partially open back? I'd guess an partially closed one but I don't really know the science behind it all. I am thinking that a 15" speaker might be fun though... if for no other reason than I've never tried one before. All this is making me want to put a speaker out on my Mustang III :P

Great idea...the cabinet looks to be made out of Mahogany and built pretty sturdy. Fender cabs were made out of pine with speaker baffles made out of MDF, so I think you will be fine with vibrations. I would make sure everything is as tight as possible, load your speaker choice and go from there.

The padding (fiberglass damping sheets) in Fender Cabs wasn't put in to dampen vibrations, but to dampen certain frequencies.

I think you have a fine project ahead of you...I have seen one similar to this before and the guy did a nice job and it sounded great and since his wife wouldn't let him keep an amplifier in the living room, this was an interesting way around her edict.

The wheat grill cloth would be great color wise, even if you darken the cab a bit. With the amount of room you might be able to do it 2x10 vertically, but a 15 would be cool too! And make a nice pretty mahogany solid wood back for it to make it a closed back.

FWIW

Keep us posted.

I would suggest going on line and researching speaker and cabinet design parameters. There's a lot out there on the subject and it is a little more complex then just leaving the back off or nailing half a board across the back of the cab.

Yeah, I'm not sure why it never dawned on me either...

There's a giant antiques mall near where I live (not where I found this) and I like to poke around there... they have all sorts of old tube radios and such but I never thought about converting one into a speaker cab until yesterday... depending on how well this project goes, I may explore the idea again in the future. It should turn out pretty sweet... it'll be a while before I can get to any actual refinishing because of the weather here in Oregon this time of year (I don't have a heated shop space or basement, just a cold garage) but I should be able to get some cleaning, stripping, sanding... all that sort of stuff done. I'll keep y'all posted.

You should try living in northern Indiana at he edge of the great snow machine we call Lake Michigan !!!

Go 30 miles south and they get half or less of the snow we get.

I went to one shop yesterday and found nothing worth converting, ten or so more to go check out in our town (Chicago tourist trap).

Just wondering if anyone has the exact hole size for a 12" driver to safely operate ?
and T-Nuts or those crazy spikes Fender uses ???

BB...I wondered how much snow you ended up with last night...got to love lake effect snow...we only got an inch here and it is all melted already...and I ain't complaining :!:

As for the 12 inch hole...the hole for a 15 inch speaker is 13.5 inches, so you will have to do the public math for a 12 inch one  I just cut a new baffle for my 69 bantam...I did a rebuild post over on the vintage page and put in a 15 inch 65 Jensen Concert Speaker.

Thanks t2

I ended up getting an old Peavey Tube amp from the 70's (2x12) and gutted it, a little help making it look cool and its my new 2x12 cab.

Recycle !!! O.K. I'm not a tree hugger (not that that they are bad in any way) but when it comes to junk amps, I do keep every spare part and it has payed off many times.

I have five amps in various stages of decay in the music room right now, but ya gotta have a hobby !
My egnater will be here on Friday according to the big brown truck guys and I'm gonna need to expand or make some sacrifices.
Those tourmaster 4212's are HUGE !

I went a slightly different direction for my VHT head.

I had these monster vintage home stereo cabs with single 12's in them.
Alnico's with HUGE !!! Magnets they say Phillips made in holland on them.

I made up a 1/4 inch jack and plugged one in, it read 4.7 OHMS and so I used the 4 ohm jack.
The sound was amazing, clear and warm, absolutely room filling sound !!!
So I went to work and with the help of some new grill cloth (greenish burlap) a bit of paint and an old PA badge I had kept from a scrapped out tower speaker.

I present the Frog !
P.S. I do have a weber arriving today to see how it sounds too.

It has a closed back, and a port on the front, best raw blues sound I've heard in a long time.
