I owned a 1963 Fender Super Amp with the 6G4A configuration. I didnt have the original speakers so I installed Eminence Patriot Rajun Cajun speakers in it and it was great!! Very tight bottom sounding and it would not break which, I am learning thats what I like.

I recently bought a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III and liked it, but to hit the sweet spot you needed to be at 4 or 5 on the volume and that was just too loud and I didnt want to deal with a attenuator. Also the speaker was loose on the bottom very loose.

I traded it for a Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue and was hoping to fall in LOVE. The sweet spot would be very easily hittable at low volumes.

Problems:

The cabinet is noisey as can be!! The lower back panel vibrates like CRAZY against the cabinet bottom!!! The speaker breaks up very early like at 3. I have a new Strat on the way, but for now I have been playing with a Les Paul with burst buckers. I know it will sound better with the single coils, but I thought for sure I was gonna love it based on the reviews.

Question:

Can anyone reccomend a good speaker that can handle the bass? (SHould I just go with the Rajum Cajun?

Would better tubes help?

I paid 750 for the Amp from GC brand new and I am wondering if I should just get a Blues Jr. III
Any advice on this amp would be great!!
Any advice on

Has anyone noticed these issues?

Maybe try a 5751 or 12AY7 in the input stage (V1). May want to wedge some playing cards into joints to dampen the vibrations (temporary cure, at least).

I like the Weber 10A125 or 10A150 alnico speaker in this amp (at least the original BF & SF).

I agree with BMW's speaker recommendations and have a Weber C10Q in my Princeton. I had a C10NQ in my PR, but it was a bit ice-picky; I put in a Jensen and it's better, but the low end is farty.

Will probably look either to another Weber, a Warehouse Speaker G10A or C, or Kendrick Black frame 10.

Why is the low end so farty on these amps? I guess I just like a deeper solid bass sound?? Still trying to like it, I love the concept! A 6V6 amp with 15 watts GREAT!! But the farty noisey stuff is killing me and I dont want to trade it in. Guitar Center is going to think I'm crazy.

what would be the smallest Fender with the best bass response?? I've heard the Super Sonic is good but the guy at GC who has been there forever said that it was Fender trying to think outside of the box and it wasn't the "true" fender tone??

I have also heard the DRRI is good?

"Farty" tones usually means a bit too much voltage being past from stage to stage. I noticed that the PRRI has 400VDC rated coupling caps. You MAY want to try quality 600VDC rated ones. One word of caution: be careful working on amps with circuit boards. You can easily damage the board or tracings-- causing a bigger mess.

Maybe try the 5751 or even a 12AY7 for lower gain in the input stage. This may reduce the fartiness of the unit. As well as give you a slower onset of OD. Worth a try, before digging into the guts of the amp.

I'd suggest a Heyboer/Allen TO20 Output Transformer, it will greatly assist in cleaning up the Bass response and is a drop-in fit with clip-on leads (no drilling/soldering). You can pick one up for $55 from Billm's website.

It was designed exactly for what you describe and will make a good difference for not much $.
Check it out here:

I think if you put the TO20 in, ensure the amp correctly biased and deal with the cab rattle the amp will sound a LOT better even with the stock speaker.

Can I ask a really stupid question?

WHY wouldn't Fender just start putting those transformers in the amp and they would have an awesome product??

Are they just stuck in a rut with upper management?

Well when you have bean counters calculating the absolute minimum number of screws they can get away with to hold the amp together so it doesn't rattle, to the point where apparently they still didn't use enough, there's no way the thought of using a Heyboer O/T would enter their minds.

Yes, the TO20 transformer will really help the bass and overall tone, I would change that first, the Jensen speaker in the amp will probably sound much nicer when fed clean bass from the beefier O/T.

A tighter speaker may help mask the problem, without changing the O/T, but I'd rather fix the flubber than mask it.
