just got my superchamp x2 head last night. connected to the speakers in m carvin sx200, and liking so far.

i want to use a 1x12 cab. with this unit. i have an empty peavey cab that i picked up cheap, and want to put a good speaker in it. i play mostly 60's-70's-classic rock-blues-jazz. no metal.

as i look at all the speakers, i am drawn to the eminence governor and wizard, and here is where my question is. both speakers have a high efficiency rating-102 or 103db. if the speaker you currently use is around 95 or 97 db, will the new speakers be that much louder? or better?

without being able to audition speakers, are there any real ways to tell the difference?
i have never gone to a music store where they have rows of speakers set up to hear the difference

thanks for any advice

If the ratings are truly 95dB versus 102dB efficiency, that is a BIG difference. I haven't seen too many speakers that are truly 102dB, at 1 watt, 1kHz, 1 meter distance to the mike. Except in very high end horn loaded hi-fi speakers. Like Klipsch horns. Read: thousands if not 10-100's of thousands of $$$ per channel.

A 2 watt amp will blow you outta room with that kind of efficiency. It's what guys using SET 2A3 flea-powered amps need to run. Most speakers rated at over 100dB, test in the mid-high 90's in the studio. There is no real standard between manufacturers for this data. Some are very optimistic.

Be sure the speakers are rated for your output wattage. You want clean? Prolly should go for over-rated speakers. Like 30-50 watts.

the speakers i am looking at are rated around 75 watts. should be plenty enough to handle this 15 watt amp

Pheddy, 75 watts for each 12-inch component? What brand/model is this speaker? If it's Eminence, they have been known to "tweak" the rated values, at bit.

Still it'll be over-rated for your amp. Should be clean to very loud.

yea- the eminence is rated at 75 watts.

this is what bothers me- ratings are hardly universal. it would be nice to put several speakers thru their paces, but that probably won't happen. some companies put "good for blues-or metal-or classic rock", etc., but that is all subjective

oh well-i am in no hurry

Which is why you're usually better off going with smaller vendors who you can talk to on the phone or via email to see what they can recommend based on your amp, playing style and tonal goals. they will usually also have a good return policy as well.

I'd suggest Weber and Guitar Warehouse; Scumback are also good. You may pay more, but you'll get detailed descriptions of the speakers vs. just wattage.

In general, the higher the wattage of the speaker, the cleaner it will sound as it takes more watts to make the speaker break up. This may be what you want, but for a 15 watt amp, there are a lot of better choices that will break up earlier and let you get a chewier sound at earlier volumes.

Phreddy, a Super Champ X2 has an honest 15 watt output. Maybe a bit more with good NOS 6V6GT's. You really don't need a super high-efficiency speaker. More depends on what tone you are after. It's best to try out potential speakers before buying.

Whether you are after alnico or ceramic magnet tone. Thin or thick cone material. Doped or non-doped. Ribbed or plain. Early or late break-up. Clean or Crunch. Maybe, look at Weber Speaker site. Their description of the various models and tone is pretty accurate. I am a big Vintage Series fan. But, you can get similar tones out of other makes.
