I just got a new SS22. Everything fine except howling feedback when the reverb goes past 5. Hilarious NOT. Back to the shop then.

It costs me time and money to go back to the shop.
And this is a very big ticket item to buy from an authorized service supplier and for it to be faulty.

Fender, fix the problem if it is a faulty part or a shipping/jarring problem.
My authorized Fender dealer doesn't even know what a "tech note" is.

Well - I'll chime in again as it's been 1 year to the day since I posted the original message.

My problem was solved. I threw my Super-Sonic in the ocean and bought a Bogner Barcelona.

Yes, it may be time to throw nostalgia and forums into the ocean and buy solid equipment. I find the Mustang and SCX2 amps to be great deals, but it seems the higher priced re-issues and what have you, are simply being cranked out to make the next financial quarter look good. The Custom Shop makes great stuff, but it is not for the musicians Leo made equipment for. I was thinking about a high end tube amp and it looks like it will not be a Fender. Billy Penn has some great new amps. Custom shop quality and prices more in line with Fender upper end commercial stuff.

I'd rather give my money to a working musician you can email and talk to than a corporate machine with banking hours. Someone without parasitic shareholders to feed.

I still love Fender and just purchased a brand new AVRI 65 Strat which I actually like MORE than my Custom Shop Strat, so they are still making some great stuff.

And I was being a bit facetious about the ocean. My SS22 is still in my possession, just replaced for live use with the Bogner.

However, several of my gigs are ocean-side, and over the years, I actually have deposited a few items like unruly pedals or tuners into the sea.

Hope he's not also the amp tech. or you need to find the next closest one. This problem has been ID'd by Fender as somewhat common and is fixed under warranty. Mine has been fine since w/ no recurrence.

Well, they are not native English so that might not help.

But you could help me - what is a "tech note" - what is the tech note about the SS22 - and where do I find info online?

Tech notes are given by Fender to Fender authorized repair center techs, not usually available to others due to non-disclosure agreements. The notes are about known issues and their fixes. If the tech notes aren't known about at a store/dealer, or by an individual, seems likely that they aren't an authorized repair center. A dealer isn't necessarily a repair center.

Very good, concise explanation/definition!

I also just got a brand new out-of-the-box SS22 that has reverb problems. The reverb is weak, as if the springs are constrained and not vibrating freely. I may take it apart to see if there's anything obviously wrong that can be fixed before taking it back to GC.

This unit also has a hiss and a hum that increases when the reverb gain is increased. Unfortunately, I've tried two other units at various music stores, and they both do the same thing, which leads me to wonder why Fender permits this to continue and doesn't do a circuit revision or have some sort of fix. I have Blues Deluxe Reissue and it is dead quiet.

The SS22 sounds are beautiful and the burn channel is to die for, but it's a lot of money to pay for seemingly poor quality.

When I had my SS22 I fixed my squealing reverb simply by replacing the cheap chinese RCA cable from the amp to the reverb pan.

YUPPERS!!!

the cables used have absolute crap for rca connectors the metal is thin so the ground connections can be intermittent as you play due to bending...(like putting your electrical cable in the amp case after a gig...JUST simply doing that CAN cause the reverb wires to skew a bit and may cause the connector to bend a bit...and it goes down hill from there, and the reverb tank it'self is pretty much standard stuff these days...high qual cables and 6201 grade 12AT7 (Tung-sol or NOS) and a mullard recovery 12ax7 my reverb is fine and i have original BF... and 6g15 a vibro king

HOWEVER i am thinking of going to MOD tanks..maybe even a medium 3 spring tank instead of the long 2 spring tanks TBD

So, my guys fixed the "reverb howling feedback" issue (I think we can call it that) apparently by inserting a plate at the top of the reverb tank to stop the springs' continuous vibration due to magnetism from the speaker... at least that's how I understand what they've told me.

I haven't opened it up yet. Sounds pretty mental to me.

What kind of plate, like aluminum, brass, plastic, or steel? This sounds like a home fix...

Well, my reverb feedback issue has recurred! After reading various posts on the 'net, I thought it may be totally mechanical and due to coupling with the cab bottom. It occurred most often on the clean chnl w/ 'fat' on and verb >5-1/2. So I had a sheet of relatively thin (probably 5/32") rubber that I cut so it would go the full length and width of the cabinet bottom and enough to fold up over the top of the leather bag. I just re-attached the original assy with it's screws through the rubber on the bottom and folded the rubber over the top.

Seems like the problem is fixed. I cranked the reverb to max and with high volume on the fat/clean channel tried to get it to feedback...it wouldn't. I'm quite convinced that it was going into resonance due to vibrations from the cabinet or perhaps even sound waves from the spkr. I won't swear it's fixed for sure, because you can't know if it might slightly reposition itself through vibration and start again, but for now it's fixed.

If it recurrs, I'll post again.
